Hatched by MagpieScholar.
5, 6, 7, 8 ...

The leader of Clan Magpie's troupe of performers, Suncaller is respected and beloved in her clan -- but it wasn't always thus.

Suncaller was born in a flurry of scandal. Shortly after she and her sister hatched, her father, Sunscald, went to the service of the Lightweaver in something of a hurry; he'd made a remark about how many mouthfuls a hatchling would make in mixed company, and suddenly no one was quite willing to have him sit next to theirs at the clan's communal dinners. He was a phenomenally fast runner, though, and found great satisfaction in leading the Lightweaver's hunt. He writes occasionally.

Suncaller shivered her awkward way through childhood under piles of wool blankets -- her Tundra mother offered to move temporarily to a higher and warmer level of the lair, but Suncaller stubbornly refused to allow her the bother -- then emerged at adolescence full of shining purpose. Adopting her father's pitiless Sakura Owl familiar, which she had been secretly re-training, she embarked on a career as an aerial dancer.

With her father's turn-on-a-dime speed and her mother's faith in the glory that rewards hard work, Suncaller produces exquisite stylings in thin air. Her lairmates while away hours watching her practice above the lair's skylights, and her troupe bases their work around her masterful gliding.

First Snow at Clan Magpie, 2017

"Cold," Suncaller muttered through her teeth, as she pulled on her thickest legwarmers in the chill, foggy, snow-dusted early morning. "Cold," she grated as she arranged her practice scarves over her wings. "Cold," she whimpered in a private moment in the stairwell, adjusting her fez and pretending it was making her any warmer. "Cold," she announced as she entered the dining room, her eye already resting on a steaming blood pudding. Despite her unfeigned disgust with the temperature, she tried to prevent her needle fangs from chattering in public.

Suncaller's mother, Val, was at one of the low, wide windows. She was clad only in a light scarf and her own permanent, gold-dappled summer coat, but she was looking out with perfect contentment at the frost that veiled the garden and the dusting of snow over the Sunbeam Ruins' cracked marble piazzas. "Pretty, though," she said, in her mellifluous voice. "It looks like everything's been enchanted."

"It looks like the marble is growing mold," Suncaller muttered.

Val looked at her steadily. The mother and daughter weren't close, exactly, but they loved each other. Ice dragon through she was, and thrilled by the cooler winds ruffling her short, silky fur, Val still remembered piling thick blankets atop her Mirror hatchling. "You know, you could skip practice today. Give your ligaments time to get used to it."

Suncaller looked up from her generous wedge of pudding, openly scandalized. "Skip practice? I couldn't. Everyone's depending on me for the season's choreography."

Val, who hadn't expected another answer, swirled her lukewarm peppermint tea and smiled a bit.

"Even if it's cold," Suncaller added, and tucked in.
