"There are many kinds of hunger."

______ Tondra awoke with a hunger. It felt like a clawing pit in her stomach, and no matter how much she ate, nothing could fill her. It drove her mad, and the clan she was born into drove her out. She wandered, alone, the strange starvation howling, burning through her mind until there was nothing left but a need to feed.

______ Stories about what Tondra devoured are still whispered in the Shifting Expanse, even today. Wires, reactors, unhatched eggs, even, some whisper, other dragons. But nothing could fill her. Nothing, until she came across an abandoned junkyard.

______ As you can imagine, abandoned spare parts are not a common sight in the Shifting Expanse. All manner of clans within the region dedicate their lives to technology, and any they stumble upon are added to one of their projects. Tondra couldn't believe her luck when she first saw the junkyard. She spent nearly a day scouting the area to make sure it wasn't a trap before her hunger got the better of her.

______ To work she went. First, she devoured every living creature hidden in the junkyard. There were less than Tondra thought there would be, but she did not dwell on it. She was too hungry. She turned to the metals and tools. All kinds of technology disappeared down her gullet. She had a feast! Finally, she could put a stop to this horrid hunger, she thought as she ate her way through the junkyard.

______ Crunch went something under foot. Hunger temporarily dampened by her feast, Tonra turned to look at was made such a peculiar sound. It was a skull. Stark white from so long in the vicious wind and weather of the Expanse, and now half crushed by Tondra's own foot, it was still obvious. The skull of another dragon, perhaps a Ridgeback. A dragon much larger than the small Nocturne in any case.

______ Instict called for her to leave, to run as fast as she could from this place and never return. But it did not call louder than her hunger. She turned and left the skull behind. She ignored the other corpses and skeletons she came across as she burrowed through the junkyard, her hunger now wailing louder than ever before. She just wanted it to stop. She needed it to stop.

______ She burst from the piles of scrap metals, clawing herself across the harsh ground. In front of her stood a huge suit of armor, intricate lines and letters she had never seen before carved into the pristine metal with something that made it glow faintly the same color of her eyes. She stared at this armor even as the ripped and tore and her insides. The armor had captivated her. Tondra reached out, longing to touch it before her hunger grew to be too much. Thunder louder than she had ever heard before rolled in the sky above as she moved closer. Almost there, she thought. Almost there, almost...!

______ Lightning crashed down. Tondra screamed as it crackled over her, lancing down the armor and over her skin. Tears filled her eyes but she could not spend them for she was already being swallowed by unconsciousness. It felt nice, she realized suddenly. The pain was fading, and finally, so was the hunger. Tondra let out one great sigh, relief replacing what had once hurt so much.

______ Pain replaced by nothingness, but there would be no true relief for Tondra. Not yet. She woke again, and for just a second she wanted to scream. She wanted to panic and rage, she wanted to destroy that stupid armor and then rip out her own heart. But when she looked for the armor and found it gone, a calm settled upon her. Fear and anger drifted away. The hunger was gone, she realized distantly. It was a thing of the past, like a dream that had never been true. The Tondra she had been was gone. She had died trying to weep, killed by her own stupidity and lack of control.

______ Tondra had been reborn, in lightning and in metal. She had survived and she would continue to do so. No. She would do more than just survive. Gone was her gluttony, but a new sin boiled within her.
