Ironically, Thanatos' only memories of his life before were of his obsessive cleanliness. As an intensely superstitious germaphobe, before-Thanatos became a complete recluse among the otherwise uncaring Plaguelings. He spent his days tucked away in a hidden sanctuary scavenging for edible food, and his nights in fitful states of rest. He never knew another dragon. He never found peace.

Before-Thanatos was killed when he was very young. As comes to him in his night terrors, a pack of bloodthirsty, barbaric, and disease-ridden mirrors found before-Thanatos to be something of a fun toy-- and one of few meat sources that was not rotting or infected. While the specifics are a blur, his emotions come to him in debilitating waves which can last several hours after nightmares have ended. In all of this, Thanatos has never found a name.

When misled young Jarl attempted to create an immortal watchman for the marsh, it was Thanatos' body (as well as Libitinia's) that was drug out of the depths. Mysteriously, Thanatos died nowhere near Clan Golden Guardian's territory-- he was murdered in the Abiding Boneyard. How his body ended up in the Viridian Labyrinth is a mystery that might never be solved.

Thanatos earned his name in a way that was less than dignifying. The great mad-scientist Jarl had no title picked out for his creation, he scrambled to find something to call this new being. Being a well-read young dragon, and observing the rather rotted texture of the monster's skin, he came up with the name for the ancient personification of death: Thanatos.

After Jarl's experiments were put to a stop, Thanatos remained. At first, he fell right back into his previous life-- harshly guarding himself against the outside world and isolating himself from the rest of the clan. As time went on, he made a few realizations.

The first thing to start to bring the fearful Thanatos out of his shell was a note from Libitina. It may seem small, but knowing that there was another dragon going through the same thing was a help. Libitina introduced herself by letter from afar. She was a medic; an expert in the art of healing and cleansing. The benefits of knowing such a dragon were immediately obvious.

The second realization was that, in all of the magic and mystery, Thanatos had become something altogether new. It wasn't quite immortality in the way he had heard it; he could still get hurt, but he seemed to barely feel it, as if it were disconnected from his own body. And it wasn't scary at all-- it was peaceful, and Thanatos could feel his fears dissolving.

It was from this miraculous rebirth that a deal was made. Libitina, skilled healer and plague mage that she was, could transfer the illness or injury of any dragon in the clan to the body of Thanatos. From here, the affliction could be studied by the ever-curious Jarl, cataloged by the studious Mair, and thus news of treatments and cures could be brought to all of dragonkind. Thanatos has found his place, his peace, and his family at last.
