The Gatekeeper

Caustic and distrustful, Lux is an inter-dimensional traveler who fell through the rift beneath the clan's territory. He decided to take on the role of gatekeeper, guiding those who fall through the gate and shutting out those he deems too dangerous. He was once a member of the Reds, but they began dealing in unsavory businesses that he did not approve of, so he abandoned them. They saw him as a traitor and hunted him down, and as he fled he fell into Sornieth's dimension. The Reds have since found their way through the portal, managing to slip through in a moment of distraction. Lux wished to send them back, but the leader of the gang, Noir, was too clever to fall for any trick he could use, and too dangerous to fight alone. The other members of the gang are loyal to her, but Ran is confident in her ability to keep the Reds under control. They remain members of the clan despite Lux's protests. His belligerent personality keeps him from befriending other clan members, but his emotional distance is born of fear. Lux wishes more than anything to forget his past and begin anew, but his long years of thievery and backstabbing are more deeply ingrained in him than his burgeoning hope for the future. His inborn sense of suspicion and suppressed sympathy make him the perfect gatekeeper, able to quickly differentiate between threats and harmless passers-by. Someday his suspicion will fade enough for him to trust again, and to build relationships with the people who he guides, but for now he acts as a distant judge.

Lux had a complicated relationship with his former gang-mate, Lokka. He does not know if what they had was love, or simply the effect of Lokka's overwhelming presence. He was too bright, too loud, and too much, and one day Lux realized that his impish grin was more cruel than mischievous. On that day, Lux slid his mask on and felt a wave of relief at the layer of separation between him and Lokka's face, wild eyed and grinning. After robbing what victims they could find, Lux disappeared into the night, fearful of how Lokka's violence seemed to escalate with each job. He walked out of the shadows and into the warped glow of the rift. No more.

When Lux left the Reds, he changed his name. Lux: an old word for light. He would never again stalk the shadowed streets of his home and terrorize those unfortunate enough to be out after dark. He would no longer wear the dark color of his former gang. He would no longer follow Lokka into fights, would no longer wear the matching red fox mask. When he arrived in Sornieth after fleeing his former life, he painted his mask a pale shade of green and swapped his red and black clothes for violet. Lux slowly but surely erased himself; wiping out everything about who he once was. When the rest of the Reds appeared from the depths of the Rift, Lux kept his mask on and carefully hid his form beneath a shawl and a hood. He rarely stays near to them, afraid they will recognize him. He is unsure what they would do if they realized who he once was: beg him to return, or kill him for the sin of abandonment. He doesn't want to find out.
