Scarus is a genus of parrotfish. With at least 52 currently recognised extant species, it is by far the largest genus in this group. The vast majority are found at reefs in the Indo-Pacific, but a small number of species are found in the warmer parts of the eastern Pacific, and the western and eastern Atlantic.
Scarus's penchant for color wasn't appreciated in his birth region, the Icefield. Why bother with color when you should be worried about staying warm? Not that that was much of a problem for him, as a tundra. Still, he sought out warmer climes and less monochromatic surroundings, and found a home with Ikposa. Here he is surrounded by color, and crafts dyes and pigments, primarily, from plants, ground-up insects and softer semiprecious gems. He also maintains the clan's general stockpile of crafting materials, whether that means leather, metal, paper, or cloth.

He tells all the hatchlings that he's as colorful as he is because he fell in a dye vat, but he's just naturally that way, with a truly dizzying combination of colors and patterns on his thick fur. He also wears some simple cloth accessories of his own making, skillfully dyed in bright colors in a stunning ombre effect. The bells on the wrap around his shoulders help others locate him when he's lost in the depths of the riotously colorful workshop.

Most of his time is spent creating his dyes and dyeing fresh lengths of fabric for Volute's use, though he also dyes the occasional animal hide for use in armor crafting, whether by dragons or Beastclans.
