Nocturnal is a Pearlcatcher without a soul. Two years ago, she was attacked by beasts who took her pearl as spoils while she lay injured and unconscious on the road. When she came to, she realized that her life as she knew it was over. No one in her society would respect her. She had no worth without her pearl. As soon as she was healthy enough to move, she began wandering, living on trinkets given as thanks for news and divination. Once she was given a Haunted Stone Orb as payment for directions, and now uses it as a sort of security blanket, since it is vaguely the size and shape of her lost pearl.

A Coatl named Fade found her on the road and asked if she knew of a place where he and his young charges could settle in and call home. Nocturnal had heard rumors that the Nature Flight was attempting to expand and gain more dragons in allegiance to the Gladekeeper, and she passed that information along. Then, the Coatl did something unexpected: he gave her a frank look and suggested she come along and find a home herself. She looked left and right down the dusty street she had been panhandling on, and then drew her cloak around her and prepared for a new life in the wilderness.

Now, she has found a mate and settled into the clan, and spends her time teaching its various members how to communicate with one another. She has developed a simple Pidgin that is a combination of gestures and taps which allows her mute Spiral, her Coatl, and her Fae companions to speak with one another. Previously, they had required Lucien or Nocturnal herself to translate between the Coatl and Fae, and Amethyst was left to her own devices with a parchment and quill. All hatchlings born into the clan are taught this special language, and as a result communication is easier than ever.
