Gnat | Young ‘un    ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ "I fear the enemy with neither teeth nor claws." - LIBRA - ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ As the youngest daughter of Precision and Nimbus, Libra was born and raised in Clan LockCharge. Having watched her many older brothers head off to pursue their own lives, Libra has a love for adventure and a longing to travel the world herself. In fact, if it were not for her charge, she likely would have left the clan years ago for a life of discovery. Often, she thinks of a life she might have spent on the highseas, or as part of a circus caravan, or even as a mercenary. But then, these lives are far out of reach for her now, when she spends her days as a devoted caretaker to the clan’s oldest member: Jag. As much as she longs for more excitement in her life, Libra’s love for Jag prevents her from holding any resentment against him. Libra was a dedicated daydreamer and a reckless fledgling when she met Jag. His place in the clan was a favor granted by Fethryn to one of his oldest allies. As she wanted to relocate her clan from Light to Earth and worried at his ability to survive the journey, Jag’s former leader arranged for him to find a new home in Clan LockCharge. Jag was grumpy, stubborn, and nearly impossible to reason with, but Libra quickly found herself drawn to the old mirror with an inexplicable urge to protect him from each and every danger. She had found her charge and nothing made her happier, however Jag was not so thrilled about the situation. For the first few weeks, she hovered at the edges of his vision, gaining her the nickname of “Gnat” from the grouchy old Mirror. She in-turn called him “My Leige,” in a quiet, teasing voice, and soon, the nicknames would be used with affection. While she had previously been fond of exploring and adventuring with the other fledglings, Libra quickly turned somber after finding her charge. She would follow him wherever he went, to his initial chagrin, and assail him with questions about his childhood, interests, battle experience, and any other topic that grabbed her interest. Jag would climb to the highest cliffs to avoid the young dragoness, but eventually on finding he could not be rid of her, Jag accepted her as a permanent fixture in his life. Surprisingly, he did become quite fond of his caretaker as time wore on. Libra dedicates every hour of the day to making sure Jag is well-cared for, although she does consent to be left behind when he supervises training exercise, but only because she trusts his fighting experience over her own. Jag and her parents both worry that Libra is putting off her life in favor of Jag’s, but she will not be swayed from her duty. In truth, she loves hearing about Jag’s life and listening to his tales about vicious battles, hard won victories, and a world with magic in the air. In particular, she has fallen in love with Jag’s story about his young apprentice, a dragon named Sanctuary. Jag speaks with pride of the young Mirror who took every lesson to heart and proved her worth on the battlefield, eventually outranking even Jag himself. When he insists that Sanctuary was his greatest success and that working under her was a great honor, Libra feels an inspiration to become just like her. Although Libra has begged Jag to teach her combat, he seems surprisingly reluctant to drag another innocent soul into the turmoil of battle. Alongside Jag and his stories of her hero, Libra doesn’t have many close friends. Before Jag became her charge, she was exceptionally close with his old caretaker, Opal. They would spend their time on Jag’s perch and spend lazy afternoons together, enjoying the frequent visits of Rasti, a clan sentinel. Eventually however their friendship waned as Opal went on to marry Rasti and the marriage lasted a sparce few months before Opal and her three children passed away from a fever. It was at this point that she took over caring for Jag, and while Rasti still dutifully visits them, Libra misses her friend with all her heart. Having learned his favorite foods, nothing pleases Libra more than Jag’s misshapen grimace (the closest he gets to smiling) when she brings him a snack in the noon of the day, sparing him the arduous climb down. When he complains of the aches and pains of old age, Libra has no problem retrieving the necessary potions and remedies from her father and Nix. Although Libra seems to have found contentment in serving, Jag does encourage her to find her own happiness as well. Despite her selflessness, Libra is prone to falling in love, though she labors to keep the object of her affections a secret. While Libra is lucky that neither of her companions have taken notice of her more-than-platonic admiration for the clan scribe, he is undoubtedly aware of her affections. He keeps her well-supplied in books to read and poems to sigh over - many of them his own compositions, but he is aware that Libra cannot leave Jag to be content with him, and so he never presumes upon her affections. For her part, Libra treasures every moment spent with Jensen, and she hoards his writings in her lair, often reading them over and over again at night and imagining that he is beside her. In spite of the deep love Libra has for Jag, there is always the undeniable truth that he will one day pass on, and nothing saddens Libra more. Beyond being her charge, he is her role model and friend. Although Libra knows he has lived an unusually long life as it is – possibly a result of his Arcane birth, the knowledge does nothing to ease her worry: she is not ready to let him go, and she never will be. Jag listens to her worries and attests that he isn’t going anywhere soon, and that when he does pass, he will always remain in her heart. Privately, she wonders what good it does to keep someone in your heart when all you want is to hold them close forever. |
