Solace | Ursa | Sanctuary    ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ "Perhaps life is not just finding yourself, but letting yourself be found by others." - SOLACE TWICEFLIGHT - ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Solace’s memories are often shrouded in mystery, or they were until she made one critical realization: they were not her own. As a young noble dragon in a small Wind Flight clan, she never expected anything extraordinary to come into her life. Ruling was perhaps the only notable aspiration she had, and even that paled under real scrutiny. The truth was, Solace had never given any thought to what she wanted to be or what she wanted to do, but then, it had never seemed important anyway. That all changed, however, when Solace met Ursa. The daughter of Nimbus and Precision, and older sister of Libra, Ursa was a bold spirit, and as she did with everything in her life, she met adventure and adversity with fierce determination. At first, she and Solace had nearly nothing in common, but as they got to know each other, Ursa’s wildness was tempered by Solace’s calmer nature, and Solace, to her surprise, began to feel that there was more to life than merely daydreaming with complacency and indifference to the world. Although both dragons were guardians, Ursa quickly bonded Solace as her charge, and Solace remained without a charge. Solace fretted over this fact, but Ursa maintained that Solace would find her charge when the time was right. Plus, Ursa knew a good many guardians who never gained a charge, but as this fact only upset Solace, Ursa tended to keep this part to herself. Eventually however, Ursa’s words would be fulfilled, if not in the way she expected. The longs days of summer passed by the two friends, and life seemed to stretch on in perfect peace. This never bothered Solace very much, but Ursa was different: that bold spirit could never stay in one place too long, and it wasn't long before she felt the winds of change and the temptation of restless feet tugging on her. One day, not even her charge could convince her to stay put. Unwilling to be parted from Ursa, Solace set aside her daydreams of idyllic court life, donning the mantle of an adventurer. As the pair set out for parts unknown, Ursa had a sneaking suspicion that they would never return again. Precision always suspected that a portion of her seer abilities had passed on to Ursa, but then again, even the most mundane dragon can have a gut feeling be right once in a while. Still, Ursa never shared her suspicions, although all would be revealed to Solace eventually. While many of their adventures were spent exploring forgotten corners of Sornieth, finding treasures and returning lost things to their owners, but all good stories take a turn for the worse, and for Solace, that came when she and Ursa confronted forces they could not hope to match. Foolishly, they hoped to conquer the darker secrets of Sornieth, and the blame was equally split between Solace's docile complacency and Ursa's unconquerable curiosity. The details are still fuzzy for Solace, but where she feels her own memories overlap with Ursa's, she recalls a ravenous hunger for the next step toward adventure, the next secret. As is common for those who go looking for trouble, the pair found it, and in the end, Solace watched helplessly as the her best friend was consumed by the shadows. After Ursa’s death, Solace felt disjointed. Her guardian, her best friend, her sister, gone in an instant. The logical part of her reasoned it out: Ursa was gone, she wasn’t coming back, and that would never change, but the desperate, irrational side insisted that someone couldn’t surely be gone just like that. It wasn’t possible, there had to be another way. That tiny part of her urged her to be more daring, more adventurous, prove herself in any way she could. The result was that Solace became a skilled warrior and battlefield medic. She tried her hand at poetry, theatre, dance – and after every attempt, she felt as though a different aspect of herself had been revealed. She was a warrior, an artist, a mother, anything she wanted to be, she could be. That little part of her always encouraged and never belittled what she did accomplish. It took a long time for her to put a name to the fragment, but once she did, it seemed obvious: Ursa. Darkness has a way of dividing even the closest of friends, but with a spirit like Ursa, so determined to pull away yet equally determined to stay with her charge, her soul itself suffered the division. A piece, perhaps not the very biggest or smallest, attached itself to the person Ursa loved most: her charge, her Solace. The remainder of Ursa was consumed by the Shade, but the little piece of her that lives in Solace also severed the darkness from Solace's soul, fitting itself into the hole left behind. Ursa's last act left a haze over Solace's memories and a near inability to seperate Ursa's thoughts from her own, but without Ursa's solution, Solace would have been consumed. Perhaps in penance, or just out of love, it was Ursa's fragment that encouraged Solace to live life to the fullest, and eventually, to seek out Clan LockCharge to reunite Ursa, for a brief moment, with her family. To most dragons, Solace is quirky and funny, with an occasional dash of seriousness, but those who knew Ursa can almost feel the twinkle in her eye and know that it isn’t just Solace laughing with them. Precision saw it first of course. As a seer, she felt Ursa’s presence in the newcomer, but she sensed that Solace needed to be seen as herself - not just Ursa’s duplicate. For Libra, who doesn’t remember her older sister very well, Solace is a close friend and confidant. It was Libra who helped Solace to realize that her charge had always been Ursa, but until Ursa had become a vulnerable part of Solace’s identity, she had never needed protection before. Solace has a very slight gift of foresight, but although she has studied with Precision, she has never quite managed to make a substantial prediction. More often, she assists Jensen with his scribing duties, cleaning his brushes and binding new books for the library. She occasionally joins some of the younger dragons in sparring to keep her skills honed, but she cannot match the likes of Titania or Lapis for shere combat prowess. Solace misses Ursa deeply, and even the comfort of carrying a tiny piece of Ursa deep in her heart, doesn’t always keep the pain at bay. Still, she lives by a promise to her sister: I will honor your memory with my life; until I join you, walk among the stars in peace. When I see you again, I will bring your missing piece with me. |
