Ophion: Whisper in the Depths
     |
Beyond the Sea of A Thousand Currents, where the Tidelord's influence no longer holds sway, the waters are wilder, deeper, and darker. None are more mysterious than the frozen waters that surround the Southern Icefield. Uncanny things live in those cold depths, and occasionally they leave their waters to stalk the land. Ophion shows his abyssal blood subtly, with dark markings that blend into the lightless currents broken by streaks of natural bioluminescence. They give off a cold glow which reveals little. But his fangs are needle sharp and many, his paws webbed, and films of translucent fins run down his back and tail. He moves uncannily fast, a shadowed shape in the water one moment, a flicker of movement the next, and then gone. His magic lets him call up an inky shroud of darkness with which to hide himself in, but he won't hesitate to turn it upon a too-bold pursuer, leaving them floundering and terrified in blinding darkness and water that suddenly seems unfathomably deep. Because of his abyssal heritage, Ophion far prefers the darkness of deeps and underwater caves to daylight, and surfaces only at night. His home is shrouded in an inky darkness that makes it impossible for any errant swimmer to see, and scares most away before they penetrate it. But sometimes, on nights when the moon casts strange shadows, he will leave the water and offer a bargain to others he meets with reason to wander at the witching hour. A single wish of theirs granted, a deep desire, in exchange for their voice. His own true voice is only ever heard in a rough, quiet whisper, perhaps a product of the rough scars, nearly hidden under fur, that mar his throat. Any injudicious comments about it will be met with a vicious hiss, and an even more vicious bite, but he speaks with the traded away voices of many, urging them on with the laughing voice that sounds like a friend they knew long ago, offering reassurance with the gentle tone of a loving parent, murmuring impossible promises in a voice so alluring it's impossible to resist... It's a one sided bargain, of course. He can grant them their desire, but always with a hidden catch. if they fail to fulfill it, their bargained for reward will run through their paws like water, evaporate like seafoam, and they'll find there's always more of a price to pay. Those who follow a siren song always find themselves shattered upon the rocks, and are lucky to emerge from the wreckage. |
