Biography

Leventhan: The Roar in the Deeps

Beyond the Sea of A Thousand Currents, where the Tidelord's influence no longer holds sway, the waters are wilder, deeper, and darker. None are more mysterious than the frozen waters that surround the Southern Icefield. Strange things live in those cold depths, and occasionally they rise to the surface.

Leventhan carries the monstrous blood of a beast born to the deep waters and freezing temperatures of his home's cold oceans. His webbed paws, thick scales more like armor, massive size, and the gills on his neck that he guards viciously as his only weak point, all are frightening reminders that he carries the blood of something old and strange, not meant to walk the land. It's rare that he ever emerges from the water, preferring to lurk deep within it. He can not survive on fish alone, heeding the vicious calling of something in him that craves what lies out of his reach, and must come to the surface to hunt when he is not wreaking havoc on whales and seals. Often he will hunt by drifting into the shallows, perfectly still, his hide the same color as the water, to lunge in a sudden impossible burst of speed at whatever unwary beast comes close. He is equally at home in salt and fresh water, and will swim miles up rivers that drain into the sea simply to see what lies along them.

However, it is in the deep water that he is most dangerous. His strength is the vast and inexorable pull of the tides, one that leads him to toss about the wreckage of ships and the vast bones that lie on the ocean floor in his playful moods. When he is less playful, he takes hold of the waves, stirring them to massive heights and loosing them. Whether upon unsuspecting ships, seaside settlements, or merely the wine dark surface of the water depends on his whim. Sometimes he merely wishes to hear the sea roar as in a storm, crashing and racing with foam, but other times he wishes to see the landbound flee and flounder. In those moods, it is best to avoid the waters around his territory until the sea calms again.

He respects only those who can best him in some way, whether it be a contest of strength or wits. Despite his brutal appearance and demeanor, he is surprisingly clever, though his knowledge is that of the ancient and uncanny things who live in lightless depths. One who can beat him in a contest will win his regard for good, and safe passage for them and their crew through his territory. Some have done so by suggesting contests in things he has never known before, such as a desperate sailor who challenged him with skill in knot tying. However, such a ploy only works once, as he will watch the one who bested him, and if they try it again they may find to their detriment that he has learned the trick of it as well as they demonstrated.
"Eternity begins and ends with the ocean's tides."
