HE, BORN OF NO GOD, THE SHADE-MARKED
~~~
Ausir shouldn't be alive - that's what they tell him. He has scant memories of that time before - just a flash here, a clouded sensation there. A life ago, when he had been someone else. Something else. Something created by the gods themselves, gods that he was meant to serve upon his death. But for him, death wasn't a passage to the divine, it was an awakening into something different. On the day he died, he awoke into something else. Someone else.
There are those who remember him from before better than he does: the dragon he had looked like and the honor he had carried. There was one with him on the expedition into the Scarred Wasteland, into the deepest, most disease-ridden bogs shrieking with miserable momento mori. Charon was there, leading them through the poisonous fog over the festering wastes. They had been attacked: some fanatics for the Plague goddess, and Ausir had taken a hit. He fell, wounded, and lost his footing. His wings failed him, and he sunk into the Wyrmwound bogs. The party left him for dead, all but Charon, who meant to retrieve his body and bring him back to Mirathorn to be exalted with honor. But somehow, he awoke, somehow, he emerged. Different, twisted, cursed. He couldn't remember.
The omen was bad enough, the deformity, unbearable. The clan might have rejected him if not for Charon's intercession and Mirathorn's mercy. After all, the Queen Guardian found a use for anyone. Against the warnings of her priestess, she accepted Ausir back into the clan, embraced him as her charge, and gave him the only task he wanted.
What indeed to do now, for a dragon who defied death and failed to be exalted? What course was there for a creature so mutated by death itself? Nothing, but to taunt the goddess that rejected him. He has dedicated his life to the Plaguemother, not out of love and reverence, but spite and hatred. He destroys and kills for her, so that she might notice him. Not as her servant, perhaps, but her equal: until he kills her, too.
