______ The fae places a stone chalice filled with blood on the mage’s desk, absent-mindedly scanning over their notes.

Checking the alignment of the crystal grid on the floor, the fae minutely adjusts a piece of chalcedony. This spell has to work- results otherwise could be fatal. The shadow apprentice scans their notes one last time as the plague mage appears, holding a variety of crystals. Abaddon carefully places the five minerals on the circle, and instructs his apprentice to fetch an athame. She complies, fetching a stone knife.

The pair of mages have been together for years, but this is the first big ritual they have pursued. This spell is dangerous- if one thing is wrong, the entire spell will fail, and consequences are harsh. The mages cannot help but feel excited. The two mages are not the first to attempt such a task, but if they succeed, they will be the first to lay claim to a new realm of power.

The ritual begins, and the two faes watch as the blood inside the chalice turns purple and begins to bubble, threatening to overflow. The faes merely watch as the circle glows purple and the candles grow dim, shadows looming from the corners. The aura in the room is menacing, but the faes assume it is meant to be, as expected from a ritual which calls upon the dead. The mages move onto the second phase of the spell, and begin their chant as the assistant moves forward. Though the fae feels nauseous, she places the athame in the centre of the circle, being careful not to touch the chalk markings.

The fae steps back as the plague mage stops his chant. He gestures at his apprentice to commune with the spirits they have summoned. She nods, and the fae speaks, telling the circle of their offerings. She takes out a purple crystal, glowing brightly with magic. The plague mage does the same, taking out a crystal the colour of spilled blood. The two mages step forward again to place the crystals next to the athame. Though the apprentice hesitates, she places her crystal down, backing away quickly. She offers her magic as a binding agent while her teacher offers his mindpower, though both are incredibly wary of the dangers involved. The apprentice silently prays to the Arcanist, hoping the spell works, though she cannot help but feel a sense of dread. Now, all that is left to do is watch.

The plague fae takes out his tome, writing down changes. He is sure the spell will work, but the apprentice is not as sure. Nothing seems to happen at first- the crystals pulsate with the two faes’ energy, but the ominous aura does not dissipate. Neither fae finds any omen that their offering has been accepted. The apprentice turns to ask her teacher whether something should have happened, but he pays her no attention.

It takes 15 minutes of heavy silence until the energy of the circle intensifies, and both faes look at the readings excitedly. Wisps of purple and black smoke surround the circle, and the two mages can barely make out the crystals. The plague mage mutters something, writing down notes in his tome. Meanwhile, the apprentice is wary. Nowhere in the explanation did her teacher mention smoke billowing from the circle. Did something go wrong?

Her teacher looks at her, but his eyes are hollow and void, a blank expression on his face. The raven’s skull on his shoulder looks even more menacing in the smoke. The fae realises something has gone wrong, and is sent into a panic. This was not supposed to happen. She has to dismantle the circle, now!

The panicked fae mutters an incantation and reaches for the crystals, only to find her teacher stopping her without a word. The apprentice ducks around him, and instead smudges the chalk with her tail, causing an angry hiss from the smoke. Or was it her teacher? The fae feels a shudder run down her back as she continues to close the circle off. However, she has a sinking feeling that she is already too late to save them both.

The fae tries reaching for the knife, only to find it crumbles to dust in her claws. She then tries to reach for her crystal, but the smoke only grows thicker and obscures her vision. Even her affinity for the element of shadow cannot help her. In the end, it is her blind grabbing that finds a crystal, though it is not hers. It is red- her teacher’s bloodstone- and emanates a deathly aura that threatens to latch onto the fae.

In a hasty panic, the shadow mage hurls the blood-red crystal far away from her, and it hits the stone wall with a loud thud. Abaddon lets out a bloodcurdling scream and staggers backwards. The apprentice seizes her opportunity to take her crystal. She manages to grasp it just before it shatters, breaking before her eyes and scattering shards to the floor.

______ The fae was born to a light clan, which promptly classed her as a magical accident. There were no other words to describe a shadow fae in a light clan. How would it have happened?

She was cast out in the hopes that the Lightweaver would not notice the patch of shadow tainting the pure, radiant clan. Though the outcast had struggled to survive in the first months by herself, she had turned to the shadows to seek power. To her, they were more welcoming than her clan ever was.

Practicing magic under the cover of the Tangled Wood became a regular habit for the solitary fae. Destructive powers became her strength, though they drained her of energy. Even as she hid under the cover of twilight, her powers grew steadily. Large-scale destruction was the fae’s only form of defense- she rarely needed to use it, but it proved very effective against warding off dangers regardless.

She had come across the arcane clan when she noticed two members- Zap and Arcani, their names were- foraging in the woods, looking for magical ingredients to take back to their lair. The fae would have stayed far away from the two, but she was curious. She had never really seen anyone in this little patch of her forest, and these dragons gave off a strange but powerful magic- she could certainly learn from them. She approached them, introduced herself and traveled with them to what would become her new clan.

A plague mage took her in as an apprentice- the fae was willing to learn how to hone her magic and grow more powerful. She was aware of the destruction she could cause, but perhaps not of the damage it caused to her friends or even to herself. The plague fae was in the process of teaching her how to master this dangerous skill when an accident caused him to lose his memory- and for the shadowling, her magic. The two mages had been toying with dark powers- the accident that occured was the fae’s only regret. Though the plague dragon remembered nothing of the event, the shadowling vividly remembered the ritual in which everything went wrong.

Though the accident had caused her to lose her magic, it had not taken everything. The fae supposed the spell had worked, in some twisted way. Most of her powers had become nulled, but one type of magic- sacrificial magic- still held great power in the fae. Now, if she wanted to use her powers, an equivalent offering would need to be sacrificed. Small things for small spells- scales or drops of blood would suffice. Larger spells were more taxing- pieces of souls, time from the fae’s lifespan, nearly all of her life energy- but the fae supposed it was only fair. After all, she was lucky to have even any semblance of magic left.
