❁ STORY

Generally quite an approachable dragon, Aphid enjoys making friends; she’s of the opinion that life is easier when folks don’t hate you. Consequently she’s often smiling and pleasant, warm and kind hearted; giving gifts if she can from her own pocket and readily lending a claw if needed. Save for times when she’s incredibly busy (festivals mostly), Aphid will stop to chat with just about anyone.

A bit of a social chameleon, she can switch between certain personalities as needed to make sure whoever she’s talking to feels comfortable; a boon of her Nocturne birth, no doubt. In spite of her largely agreeable demeanour, Aphid has a huge competitive streak and it is widely accepted best to never challenge her to a game. She hates losing, and while she won’t cheat (openly) to ensure a win, she’ll employ everything up to that point. She walks a fine line. Just don’t play games with her.

Aphid also has little ‘no touching’ bubbles on all of her personal belongings and woe be upon anyone who ignores that. Generous and kind she might be, but her stuff is hers and no one should ever touch it. Ever. She’ll hurt them. Seriously. Paws off. Regardless of her ferocity when defending her things, Aphid is an intellectual at heart. Most of her time is spent in the library where she has a little office room for official accounting (her sole responsibility since Kerugma left) and chronicling duties and a tunnel leading down to the Vault where everything is safely catalogued per her pedantic nature. She enjoys learning and as such is one of the few Pencil allows into the library proper to actually physically touch the tomes. Aphid and Pencil have an odd sort of relationship. They frequently engage in what they term ‘friendly debates’ but what everyone else calls ‘heated arguments’. Pencil is the only dragon in the lair Aphid will raise her voice with and by all appearances their debates are actually quite harmless. For the most part they’re considered friends. The debates are all in the name of academia. Obviously.

Given her good nature, Aphid is often a good choice of mediator. Friends with everyone and a pacifist to her toenails, she hates to see her denmates bicker. Usually she leaves the intervening up to Denara but Aphid has one very important trick up her sleeve: she knows everything. About everyone. Her instinct to learn every last thing she possibly can means she would probably make a good spy. Though she’s obviously not a spy that’s ridiculous. But if she was, she’d undoubtedly work closely with Denara and Tarlith (the master of whispers for the Hive). She’d also be able to blackmail anyone she wanted if she had dirt on them. And let’s face it; most of the residents of the Reliquary have something to hide. So if she was a spy, Aphid would know all those secrets. She’d know the details of clans they’re friends with. And clans they’re not. She’d know things because she’d have an extensive spiderweb of informants around Sornieth. And no one would suspect the monk-born dragon of something so dishonest because she’s too pure and kind.

But she doesn’t know any of this, of course; she’s just an accountant and store taker. She works with Osprey and Ji Qeng to keep the lair’s stores and stalls well stocked and that’s the extent of her extra-curricular activities. No spying for her.

ORIGIN / Born in a more mountainous part of the Steppes, Aphid spent most of her formative years in a monastery. Hers was a quiet clan, putting stock in academia. They had the greatest library Aphid has ever seen (although Pen is doing her best to change that), and huge vaulted ceilinged map room where the walls were covered in charts and diagrams and a massive globe of Sornieth filled the centre. It was here that Aphid picked up her love of numbers and where she first encountered those who made her want to travel, made her want to meet folks and hear their stories. This, in turn, led her to the collection of secrets. Probably.

Fact / Though not innately born with a desire for much travel, the monastery she previously called home did emphasise meeting others and learning which she did believe was worthwhile. Cautious and an exceptional planner, Aphid may have missed the point of a journey of self-discovery, but her pedantic nature saved her from a few encounters with unsavoury characters in the Sea. In spite of her hesitancy to explore she is widely travelled and had visited a number of places before settling in the Reliquary. Now she leaves the journeying to Calla.

Likes / Numbers, especially when the numbers all check out and reach the same conclusions. Numbers are nice and predictable, they make sense, more sense than dragons that’s for sure. She’s a fan of the smell of fresh parchment and newly unstoppered ink and the sound of coins as they get added to the Vault.

Dislikes / Being bothered while at work, hatchlings messing up her cataloguing, the big festivals of the year that require all the cataloguing. Pencil forgetting to tell her about relocating the accounting folders or completed clan history tomes to the library also causes her quite a bit of frustration.

Interests / While mapmaking is not part of her job description, she enjoys doing detailed diagrams of the lair and its surrounds. She mapped the land around their old lair in the Tangled Woods as well as the route they followed to Dragonhome as well and her detail is always impeccable. They aren’t necessarily wide in their documentation of the land but Callana often does up scribbles of other locations to make up for it.
