Personality: While not what one would call effusively friendly, Dirk is an amicable enough dragon. Polite and refined, he is very good at getting on the good side of other people. However, he is also a stern taskmaster, and accepts nothing less than the very best from those who work under him. Though not free with his praise, if you do impress him he will make certain you know about it, and a good turn done him will always be repaid in kind.

History: Dirk was, once upon a time, a member of a small but fierce light flight clan of pearlcatchers known as Clan Cantour. The Cantours were tradesmen by nature, flying from the various borders of Light Flight’s territory and ferrying goods do their neighbors in exchange for coin. As a rule they did not get involved in inter-flight squabbles, because that had the potential to hurt their business. Dirk, though born to this clan, wasn’t really interested in trade or business as a permanent profession. Instead, he longed to start a school for magic, being himself a very skilled if not all that powerful mage.

One day, however, the Cantours found themselves caught in the crossfire of a squabble between a fire flight clan and a shadow flight clan. Unwilling to engage the conflict, the Cantours swiftly extricated themselves from the battle and fled as they always did. When the stopped, unfortunately, they realized they’d picked up a hanger-on in the confusion. Safira, a mirror from the Shadow clan embroiled in the conflict, had panicked and flown off with them, not realizing they were not her clanmates. The Cantour leader was in favor of sending Safira back to her family, but somewhat to their surprise after some initial fear of her “captors,” Saf flat refused to leave. She explained that her father was the leader of the huge shadow clan, and that he wanted to give her away as a mate to a neighbor clan in order to win an alliance with them. Safira didn’t wish to mate with this stranger, nor did she care much for her father, who was cruel and cold to her. Dirk was one of a faction who argued in favor of letting Safira remain with them- who was even going to know what had happened to her to accuse them?- and after much intense debate the Cantours reluctantly agreed that Safira could stay.

Though she was skittish and reclusive, Dirk gradually befriended the shadow flight mirror. He explained to her his dream to start a magic school, and was generally polite and amicable as few had ever been to her in her life. Safira slowly opened up to Dirk, coming to value his encouragement and his friendship, and the simple sincerity with which he approached his life and the people in it.

It was not to last, however- Safira’s clan did eventually, after nearly four years, track her down. Unwilling to hand over the dragon who had become his friend, even if the rest of his clan was inclined not to make waves, Dirk lied to Safira’s father and claimed that she was expecting his hatchlings, and as his mate she could not return with her father. Cheated, but unable to do anything until the eggs were laid- a female who was removed from the elemental domain in which she had conceived would become egg bound and die- he left, promising to return in a few months time to claim his daughter. Knowing that Dirk had lied, Safira pointed out that he was dead when the time expired and she didn’t have any eggs. Dirk said that if it bought her time to escape, that he’d accept the consequences. Moved, Safira invited Dirk to escape with her, fleeing far from her father’s gaze and away from the Cantours who might try to catch her and turn her over. Dirk was surprised, but after some consideration he agreed, and the two left together.

Fleeing to the south, the two eventually found their way to Clan Brayuh, where Safira was in for something of a shock. Her father’s brother, Ezra, had been exiled at some point after Safira fled, and was living in the Southern Icefields. Having always loved her uncle far more than her father, Safira begged Dirk to stay in the ice clan so that she could be with Ezra. Reluctant at first, Dirk eventually agreed to the arrangement when the clan’s leader promised him the position of magic instructor to the clan’s young. Now Dirk perfects his skills with magic and the teaching thereof, in the hopes of one day starting his school after all.

Love Life: Dirk and Safira aren’t “mates” in the strictest sense of the term, but they are very close friends and have occasionally sired nests together after a long winter night of way too much fermented berry juice. Theirs is a comfortable, easy relationship, and neither feels particularly inclined to look for more out of it.
