He watches, waiting, welcoming; a still pile of leather and scales in a corner. Kindred eye each other, silent in a hall of rustling wings and uneasy shifting claws.

Silence. Silence. Silen–

A youngling sighs, an irate fledgeling snaps, and voices are raised around him. Sharp words and barbed accusations flung about, wings are raised, the air is charged. He is quiet, unmoving. His mate stands outside, barring the doors from anyone uninvolved.

He waits longer, until fury feeds into disappointment, disappointment feeds into tears, tears become soft exhaustion and tired glares. By then they have forgotten him, seeing only themselves and those who have wronged them.

That is when he speaks: soft, even, resisting a nocturne's natural urges to mimic. Anger must be controlled. Anger matched for anger only causes more.

He does not cause more. He does not tell them who is right. He does not tell them who is wrong. He asks, them, softly, to repeat their words – from the other side. To mimic each other, what he does not himself repeat.

More words, tentative and then impassioned, building emotion. He stops them before they find the end of their anger. He asks a simple question.

"Does it feel different when you are on the other side?"

Crests fall. Feathers and leather rustle sheepishly. Apologies are mumbled, cautious hugs offered, and the doors are flung open without rage.

The hall is calm while Forseti presides.
