The universe was burning. It had started as a spark- flash of brightness along the edges of his awareness- and it spread faster than even he could follow.
It was breathtakingly beautiful. Growing. Shifting like a living, breathing thing. When he was finally, finally able to tear his gaze away from the silent, yawning inferno, the nothing beyond left him reeling. The blinding light only made the void behind it that much more dark. More empty. More hungry. As it reached towards its predecessor with a flickering awareness, it did the only thing it knew. It wrapped its claws around that impossible brightness and snuffed it out. In that moment, everything changed. 
They were an impossibility. Twins had never been heard of before, not for their kind. Natural born mages were a rarity on their own, but to have a mother with enough raw potential to carry two to term... It was no wonder that fear tinged whispers spoke of dark rituals and forbidden, ancient magics. And, while word of the unease and superstition did reach the ears of the magistrate, there was no quelling the bubbling glee that surrounded the new parents. |
