Mardikan is one of the clan’s two librarians (the other being Blacksand). He loves anything book-related and can’t seem to get enough books of any and all kinds. Mardikan sorts every book and scroll in the library, which is always expanding, for one reason or another. Blacksand used to offer his help, but after the tiny Fae continuously refused, and even started getting mad at Blacksand for trying to help, he gave up and let Mardikan do all of the organizing of books. The only time Mardikan will accept Blacksand’s help with sorting is when there’s a book that’s too big or heavy for the little Fae, but that’s only after he’s been trying to move it for hours on end.

Other than his need to sort books independently, he’s generally a friendly dragon who just loves reading. Though... every dragon has their quirks.

Mardikan is a bit of a kleptomaniac, which is someone who impulsively takes what doesn’t belong to them, usually with nothing to do with the actual value of the stolen item. However… Mardikan is only a kleptomaniac for books, scrolls, and related objects. After the rest of the clan learned about this, he was dubbed “the Kleptolibrarian,” and everyone started locking up their personal books.

Well, almost everyone. Mark, being a writer, spends a lot of his time creating stories and writing books. He’s good friends with Mardikan, and he will purposely leave copies of his books lying around, knowing the kleptolibrarian would snatch them up at the first chance he gets. Most books Mardikan takes go straight to the clan’s library, however Mardikan also has a smaller personal library of his own, filled with books and/or scrolls that don’t quite belong in a public library. He just can’t help but hoard these things, but Mardikan also knows that if they were in the clan’s library, they’d be returned to their owners. So, he keeps them in his personal library, which no one has been able to find yet.

Mardikan doesn’t just take books, he loves reading them too; both books he has read and (especially) books he hasn’t. If he can’t manage to take someone’s book to read, Mardikan will usually just try to read it over their shoulder (or sit on their head, because tiny faes can do that with most other dragons). His favourite reading buddy is Kemitha, who keeps a very close eye on her personal books, but she doesn’t mind the little fae reading with her. It’s very common for the two of them to be seen sitting under a tree on a nice sunny day reading a book, with Mardikan perched on her shoulder reading silently.

____A stranger reading buddy of Mardikan’s is Latin, the mysterious, and somewhat ominous, soothsayer. Most dragons give her a wide berth, frightened by her work and the energy she gives off, but Mardikan quite likes her company. He doesn’t seem to know what fear is, or maybe it’s that he just doesn’t understand that dangerous things could kill him. Whatever the case, Mardikan isn’t scared of anything, and he certainly isn’t scared of Latin. He enjoys hanging around her, as she writes many things into journals about daily occurrences and frequently obtains foreign books about obscure things, some of which are encoded. Latin doesn’t keep her things locked up per say, however Mardikan still hasn’t managed to take one of her books, as the bogsneak seems to know when Mardikan is going to attempt it, and she stops him each time. Latin doesn’t chase him away though, as she does enjoy his company, mostly because he’s one of the only dragons who will not only stay around her, but also not feel uneasy or frightened of her.

____On the more dangerous side of relationships, Mardikan is “friends” with the scientist, Comet. Any dragon who’s met Comet becomes intensely confused whenever they see him interact with Mardikan. The usually cold and somewhat narcissistic imperial does his best to keep Mardikan happy by acting “friendly” (though any dragon with any sense of reading body language or voice tones would find these interactions very forced and strained), as well as giving the fae books occasionally. No one knows why Comet acts this way towards Mardikan… No one except Comet and Mardikan themselves.

____Many dragons, especially the clan leader, Raza, suspect that something is up, but any mention of the relationship between Comet and Mardikan is ignored by both of them, usually with Mardikan playing dumb and saying they're friends, though Comet preferes to change the subject or pretend to be busy with something...

MARDIKAN AND COMET

Pages in an open book fluttered quietly as tiny wings flapped towards it. The night was silent save for the slow, deep breaths of the sleeping Imperial curled up merely a fae-tail-length away. He may have been a light sleeper, but the flaps and footfalls of the tiny fae were lighter. Landing on the desk gently, the intruder inspected his surroundings carefully, noting the open bottle of ink and large quill lying on the wooden surface. But that’s not what drew the fae here...

With careful talons, Mardikan flipped through the large book quietly. His amber lamp illuminated the pages with a warm, comforting glow. The book was almost as big as he was, which prevented him from just taking the book home with him, to Mardikan’s utmost dismay. The pages were filled with paragraphs of neat handwriting. Everything was neatly catalogued, with the entries labeled with the day it was written. The words described many things that the Imperial had discovered.

At first, it was mostly about average things; alchemy, golems, magic, etc. Though, it quickly evolved into something else; something much darker. The pages started to speak of unthinkable things and terrifying tests with their results.

Mardikan’s eyes widened as he read. He had come here to read an off-limits book, and he now knew why it was hidden away from others. Though the things written were unfathomable, Mardikan couldn’t stop reading. Each word became ingrained in his mind as he read it, like all other books he had read. He was so spellbound by the handwritten horrors he forgot he had to be silent as to not wake the book’s writer.

He gasped as he read the most recent entry, realizing what everything meant. There seemed to be a pit in his stomach now; a dread that spread from his gut throughout the rest of his body. For a moment, he thought it was because of what he had just read, but then he realized...

The room was filled with silence.

Mardikan turned around sharply, his tail closing the book with a muffled thunk as he did so. He froze as he came face-to-face with the no-longer-sleeping Imperial known as Comet.

"What are you doing here?” the scientist asked calmly, but his expression betrayed his fury (unbeknownst to Mardikan, who, like most faes, can’t read body language well). When Mardikan didn’t provide an immediate answer, Comet stood up to his full height, towering menacingly above the tiny librarian. “You have ten seconds to come up with a believable excuse before I-”

"I could tell the rest of the clan about what you’re doing,” Mardikan interrupted, not a hint of fear in his monotone voice. Like most Faes, Mardikan lacked the body language and tone variations in his voice, instead showing his emotions through his crest, which was perked up in interest as calculated thoughts ran through his head. He felt no fear whatsoever; he never had. However, dying now meant there were still so many books he hadn’t read, and even more he didn’t have in his library! Mardikan couldn’t stand those thoughts, so he decided he would not die tonight.

____Comet was looking at the Fae through narrowed eyes. The scientist's eyes flicked from Mardikan to the now-closed journal on the desk, then back to Mardikan.

____"What makes you think you can get out of here alive?” Comet demanded coldly. His whiskers were twitching and his tail was lashing. Somehow, he hadn’t knocked anything over with that tail of his, which mildly impressed Mardikan.

____Instead of answering the angry scientist, Mardikan launched himself off of the desk suddenly, flying towards the nearest exit. Comet snapped at him, but the small Fae easily outmaneuvered the massive Imperial, and he found himself outside Comet’s den within seconds.

____Wasting no time at all, Mardikan started swiftly flying towards his home; the library. Though it was late at night, the library always had someone in it, whether that was Mark writing another one of his books, Kemitha re-reading one of her favourite stories, Latin researching some more magical properties from scrolls, or Blacksand going over clan information and making sure everything was still in order. Comet wouldn’t dare try anything if there was a witness, Mardikan knew that for sure.

____Suddenly, a large paw batted Mardikan out of the air. As he hit the ground, his lantern shattered loudly, scattering shards of glass everywhere and causing Mardikan’s only source of light to vanish. The black shadow of the Imperial loomed over him, ready to strike.

____"What’s going on out there?” came a voice. Comet’s head whipped towards the sound. Both dragons had recognized the voice immediately, and the scientist seemed to start panicking slightly, though Mardikan was oblivious to it. In a few moments, Raza, the clan leader, would be here.

____"Alright how about this, you don’t tell anyone about what you read, and I won’t take you away and do things worse to you than what’s written in that journal.” Comet offered threateningly. “I’ve been here much longer than you have. They’ll believe me over you if you do tell someone. So, what’ll it be? Do we have a deal?”

____Mardikan hesitated, but nodded, then realized Comet could probably only see him about as well as he could see Comet, so he spoke up.

____"Yes,”
