Rise and fall of Dargof

We were young once, naive to the inevitable doom looming just over the horizon. We were full of life. Full of hope. Full of possibilities. There was no propose for our existence: no role we were required to play. No cataclysmic devastation that we had to recover from. No overarching story. We simply were.

The struggles were many. Though we wanted to house every wild dragon we found, we simply could not. And that spurred us on. One day, we would be able to keep all the displaced dragons. Bit by bit we cleared out enemies. We staked our land. We may have been small back then, but it was our home. It was something just for us. We made a home. We made friends. We made allies. And enemies.

And the enemies were the hardest part. The indignation that tinted our world was nearly unbearable. Harsh words and harsher actions. The darkness that spread like wildfire. Our perfect world. Shattered. And all we could do was pick up the pieces. Pick up the pieces and try to move on. The seeds of all-encompassing void were planted early.

We fought tooth and nail alongside our dragon companions. We clawed our way up the rankings, preening each time we knocked someone down a peg. And that was what it was all about. Making fiends. Competing. Testing our mettle against a common enemy. The sweet taste of victory on our tongues.

But change was on the horizon.

When the unicorns returned to the land, our excitement knew no bounds. From afar we watched, stunned by their elegance and power. And, when we decided to test our strength against them, we found ourselves fearing for our very existence. They could have beaten us, driven us from our homes in a heartbeat. But we banned together once again and overcame. We defended ourselves and solidified our claim to the land. We proved our strength and determination.

But there was one advisory we could not fight no matter our strength. It started small. Those who we looked up to, those who had nearly become gods in our eyes, vanished. It was a dark time in which anarchy ruled supreme. The newborns knew no different, knew nothing of order and peace. But those of us that remembered cried for redemption. What had we done to drive them away?

There were few of us that rose through the chaos. We made a name for ourselves. We held things together. It was a broken desperation that united us, but it worked. It had to.

And when our gods were finally returned to us, we resented them. Who were they to try to impose order on us? We who had seen the jaws of destruction closing in around us. We who had filled the void they left behind. We who had begrudgingly become the gods this land so desperately needed. We were not going to be cast aside without a fight.

But, we had grown wise in our time as faux gods. Cunning. Plastering grins on our faces,, we reigned in the indignation. Internalized it. And let it fester. We praised their return just as loudly as anyone else. Perhaps even more so. We handed back their thrones willingly and skunk of into the shadows to wait. They had abandoned us once. It was only a matter of time before they did so again. And we were more than ready this time.

Things quickly went back to the way they had been in their heyday, aside from a single, monumental difference. We had tasted freedom and self sufficiency. And we liked it. The cracks in the system- in our fealty- were starting to show. Our draconic companions trained for a new, far more sinister purpose. We were going to overthrow a god.

But, when the inevitable did happen, the monarchy collapsed in an entirely unexpected way. Almost before we realized what had happened, the vacancy had been filled. A new ruler rose up from the masses- a non-contender in the previous chaos. A new face. And their reign was indisputable. Signed into the very fabric of our realm.

There was nothing we could do. How could we have anticipated the backdoor negotiations that denied us? We bit back our retorts. Oh we tried to be civil. We tried. But if our gods had ignored us so thoroughly, what did we expect from their successor? We bit back our seething, bubbling rage when our voices were ignored. He couldn't hear us. And our gods were dead. Dust to dust. Out with the old. Long live the king.

And the seeds grew- the void sprouted in our souls and hung in the air in a palpable miasma. We turned to it unknowingly. Gorged it on our dissatisfaction and apathy. We gave it power over us. Made it our god. Sacrificed in its name. Gave it sentience. It reached its fingers toward the outliers. Swallowed up the smaller stables, reveling in its newfound power. It had tasted freedom and self sufficiency. And liked it. Destruction spread to the next lair, snuffing them out one at a time. Perhaps it was inevitable. Soon the only ones left were the tyrants of old- the faux gods standing watch over their tattered domains. The last lights standing defiant in the face of that unyielding darkness, waiting for the silence to swallow them up, too.
