Recruitment Head

Things for Akira were not always as they are now. Indeed, some aspects of her past seem so far away it is almost as if they were from a dream. And at night, her pearl whispers memories to her...memories that are not entirely her own.
She began her life as a Guardian, dwelling in the forests of Nature territory and serving beneath the Gladekeeper with her family. She was a solemn, well-behaved child, always intent on doing things correctly, on listening to her elders. But she knew from an early age that she would not live there forever. It became increasingly clear, as she grew, that her destiny did not lie in her homeland, and she left to seek out her charge as a young adult. Her travels led her to the edges of the Tangled Wood, where she met...her.
The day they met, the sun was obscured by clouds and the shadows cast by the forest. In the gloom, Akira could barely make out the shape of a dragon -- smaller than she was, and caught in the twisted brambles. Akira moved quickly, before she understood what was happening or why she cared; she gave it no second thought, merely plunging forward. She knew, simply, that the pearlcatcher was in danger, and that it was her duty to help. A Tengu closed in from behind, a flurry of feathers and the gleam of a scythe in the low light, and the battle that ensued was swift but messy, punctuated by screeching cries and the cracking of underbrush. Akira emerged the victor, sides having, wounded in several places, and as the pearlcatcher she had saved extracted herself from the brambles that had caught her, something meaningful passed between them.
Her name was Leliana, and she was like nothing Akira had ever seen. The pearlcatcher had a certain grace and beauty that seemed not quite natural, as though given to her by some external force. And something dark and mischievous glinted in her shadowy eyes. "I thought pearlcatchers were supposed to be Light dragons," Akira would tease her, often, and Leliana would simply laugh her sly laugh and shrug. "Just the ones who don't want to have any fun."
Akira grew more skilled in battle as her time guarding the pearlcatcher. She had to; Leliana had an odd tendency to attract trouble wherever she went. But Akira didn't mind. She lived to guard her charge, after all, and besides - those moments when the pearlcatcher smiled, the world seemed to fall away and go silent around them. She had been warned of the dangers of falling in love with her charge, but she tumbled headfirst into it anyway. And for a while, the two were happy. Akira grew fearsome as a warrior, fighting off the beastclans and monsters that seemed drawn to her beloved. And in turn, Leliana showed her so many things she had never seen before - magic, and illusions, hidden places and beautiful secrets.
But in the end, Akira could not protect Leliana from herself. The pearlcatcher had long been a student of dark magics, and though Akira had always suspected - always known, in the depths of her heart - she would never admit it aloud. But Leliana's interests grew ever darker, ever more forbidden, and slowly the Shade began to infect her. There was nothing Akira could do. There was no enemy she could battle, no foe to vanquish. She could only watch helplessly as the Shade consumed her beloved. Leliana realized, too late, that she could not hold back the darkness that grew within her. She knew that the Shade would eventually destroy her - and, having fed upon her power and magic, be strengthened and seek out another victim. "It will end with me," she decided, at night when her guardian was sleeping, and she did what needed to be done. Using the last of her magics, she sealed herself away, sacrificing her life, her body, in the process. She left behind only her pearl, and a note for Akira saying simply: Remember me. -- Akira awoke with a terrible empty feeling in her chest. She knew, immediately, that Leliana had gone - before she even saw the pearl, before she glimpsed the note. But something unexpected happened as she reached out for the pearl. As her claws curled around it, something like an electric shock coursed through her. A strange sensation, not quite painful but not exactly pleasant, rushed over her like warmth and pressure - as though she were being buried, or pulled under a warm tide. There was a brilliant flash of light. And then there was no light at all.
It was some time later that Kelsus found her, a half-starved pearlcatcher who could barely remember her name. No one in Clan Yulon could quite figure out, at first, what it was that their leader saw in the new recruit. Akira didn't know how she had come to adopt this new form; she could not begin to understand the magics at work. But she kept Leliana's pearl close to her, and added her own memories to it as best she could. She is herself, at heart: The faithful guardian, steadfast, powerful in battle and with a sharp mind for tactics. But she is Leliana, also: Playful, sly, with a clever sense of humor and a hunger for life and knowledge. She is grateful for Kelsus and the life she has in Clan Yulon. Grateful for the role she has to fill, the job that gives her life meaning when it would otherwise have ended with failure. But even more grateful that no one asks her too many questions about her past, or the oddly colored pearl she carries. At night, she sleeps curled around it, and the pearl whispers in words only she can hear, and as time passes she can no longer quite remember where her own memories end and Leliana's begin. She waits for the Shade to come for her, but it never does. And in the depths of her heart, she knows that so long as that pearl is kept safe, it never will.

Since arriving in Yul, Akira has begun to adjust to her new form, and heal from her experiences both mentally and physically. Though still a little clumsy as pearlcatchers go, she is graceful to most other dragons, though she has bonded a bit with Rhea over their clumsiness. Despite not being exactly the same, Kelsus has helped her a lot in accepting herself, since Kelsus is half Guardian herself. Akira appreciates the solidarity, and has been working on bettering herself and her city. She's been focused on recruitment, heading up the small force of dragons who search for new members of the clan. She often visits other flights because of it, often returning with new friends. Yul has grown considerably because of her efforts.
She spends quite a bit of time in the temple whenever she's in the city, and leaves offerings for the goddesses regularly.
