Heirloom has styled herself official taste-tester of Clan Magpie ever since, in a childhood fumble when barely out of the nest, she dropped her pearl into a pot of centipede consommé. The chef, TomatoSoup, rescued the tiny pearl and set aside the entire steaming batch for the distraught hatchling's private consumption over the next several days, winning the little Pearlcatcher's loyalty for life. (The fact that no one would have actually consumed pearl-contaminated broth unless they were actually starving never seemed to occur to her; her pearl is precious and perfect and naturally would have made the soup tastier.)

As a willowy adult with a prodigious appetite, Heirloom has taken charge of the lair's communal food inventories. She is usually to be found snacking on honeybee and sweetgrass salads while she rearranges jars of insects and crates of fresh leaves -- and pesters Soup to use up old ingredients first, please.
