"One day I'll find a cure and finally get out of here."

Born in a nest with four other hatchlings, Blain was the only one who didn't leave the clan - not because he didn't want to leave, but because he was physically unable to. While most of his siblings had also inherited their mother's gemstudded skin, Blain's hide was too delicate to handle the protrusions, resulting in continuous inflammations and infections, which drain his energy and sap his strength. Various physicians visiting the clan have done their best to treat the young pearlcatcher, but none have found a permanent solution to his condition. Blain has formed a tentative friendship with the healer Hugh, who has done his best to use his healing magic to close his sores, though privately Blain doubts that magic will ever do him any good.

Blain isn't sure how he feels about his parents. While he really appreciates his mother's care and knows he wouldn't survive long without the constant attention, he'd love it if she'd just give him a bit of space and time to himself. He admires his father's dedication to research and has inherited it, being bound and determined to find the cure for his condition, though he deplores his father's brusque manner toward other dragons in the clan.

He doesn't like to be around other dragons since he's embarrassed about the sores on his hide, so he mostly keeps to himself and does his research alone in the library...though no matter how far back in the archives he goes, he can never evade his overly protective mother for long.

He remained a relative recluse until a small pearlcatcher repeatedly ran into the small room in the archives he used to spread out his research, every time in a state of panic, as if he was being hunted. He always stayed for a time before leaving. Blain did his best to ignore the intruder - it was no concern of his, after all, and the hatchling clearly wasn't there to see him - but when the other broke their habit of silence and asked the older pearlcatcher to take him back to the cove, Blain sighed and showed the hatchling the way. It was a ruse, however - the hatchling, Sift, had been using the room to hide from spirits who were pursuing him, and he was convinced it was Blain who was keeping them at bay. Blain barely resisted rolling his eyes at the notion - neither of his parents were magical, and he surely wasn't either - but further tests proved Sift's hypothesis correct. Spirits simply did not want to go anywhere near Blain, as there was something about his aura that repelled them. Blain knows that his sores are repulsive to dragons, so he is a bit disheartened that spirits also find him disgusting, but Sift is so elated to have found a solution to being constantly plagued by spirits that Blain finds it hard to entirely dislike his odd talent.

As Sift is only truly safe in Blain's company, Blain is forced to accompany him nearly everywhere, even out on excursions to acquire new texts for the library. Blain enjoys perusing the tomes for sale while Sift is bartering, as he still hopes to discover a cure for his condition. However, Sift's constant companionship has made his life in the clan far more bearable than he ever dreamed it would be, and he no longer makes plans to depart as soon as he achieves a state of health.

The only one in the clan who can truly commiserate with his ill health and pain is the imperial Ember, who suffers from arthritis. He later met Hazelmist and discovered that, though he was the son of the clan's new physician, he had a disorder in his lungs that frequently caused shortness of breath and the occasional wracking, bloody cough. At the urging of the clan's psychologist, the three of them began meeting regularly as a sort of support group.

Though his ill health excuses him from most duties, he has taken it upon himself to care for the clan's pools along with Cecil.
