"No, I'm not that Winter. Do I look like I'd mate with a coatl?" The desire to know drives Winterhain - he is always looking up some fact or tidbit of esoteric knowledge by scrying in his pearl, a magical art he has perfected after much trial. Since his pearl is the essence of his memory and experience and therefore contains every query he's ever researched in the past, the odds are likely he'll find the answers after staring into the glimmering surface of his pearl. On the rare occurrence the question is one he has never heard before, he will meticulously conduct research using any available material and will not stop for rest until he has an answer. The pearlcatcher traveled to the island of Prufrock when he heard of the library. Though he never officially applied for the position, he sequestered himself at a desk near the reference material and couldn't resist correcting others using the materials because they were doing it wrong. Before long, many of the clan's researchers were coming to him with their reference questions, though some in the clan are too timid to approach him due to his abrupt, snappish manner. Everyone who has ever interacted with him has soon learned not to bother him while he is staring into his pearl, as he is even grumpier than usual when disturbed in searching through his reminiscences. He gets even more tetchy when the coatl and other dragons in the clan confuse him for Winternight. It's hardly his fault that they're both pearlcatchers with icy-hued wings and a name that begins with Winter. Winterhain had taken more than one mate in his life, but none of them stuck around for long, perhaps due to his asocial nature. None of his children stayed for long, either - all but one had departed to serve the gods. This bothered him more than he'd ever admit to anyone, so when he met Blip, a snapper with a similar background, he decided that this time, it would work - this time, he would have a mate who would put up with him, surliness and all, and with any luck, hopefully at least one hatchling who would decide to stay and learn from him. Blip was equally ardent, so as a symbol of their resolve, they had a visiting jeweler make them matching lapis lazuli jewelry. Out of a nest of five eggs, only one hatchling, Blain, decided to remain on the island of Prufrock with his parents. Though saddened by the departure of the others, Winterhain is glad one of his offspring is staying to learn from him, though he worries about his son's health. |
