Though darkness surround thee, the light in thy heart will be thy candle.

.. The dragon you see before you was normal. Once. His name was Lucien, and he was the child of Sunshine and Vyral in the Sunbeam Ruins. The pair was united by chance, had a whirlwind fling, and laid a single egg born from it. Their son was just as shining and beautiful as they were, with Light eyes to match, and they decided to try and raise him to have a shining heart to match his shining appearance. They drummed strong morals and a strong sense of justice into him from a young age, trained him to fight with magic, tooth and claw, and blade, and told him stories of the darkness of the world and how important it was to try and make the world a better place. As an adolescent, he was eager to test himself against criminals and villains, and so bade his parents a fond goodbye.

He started slowly, with petty criminals like thieves and cut-purses. He beat them soundly with burning enthusiasm and turned them in to the proper authorities with glee, taking the reward only at their insistence. The work alone was the reward to him. As he grew, he took on higher and higher level lawbreakers, whether actual laws or the moral laws by which he felt everyone should operate. He only grew in combat prowess, and grew in fame, until evildoers everywhere trembled at his name. He wasn't perfect, certainly not. He didn't always succeed, he could be too unforgiving and overzealous for the pettiest crime, and he was something of a workaholic who didn't know the meaning of the word 'break'. But he was, in reputation, a paladin known for being a shining example, a beacon of hope to the downtrodden, the downfall of many a murderer, mafia member, evil king, and the like. Little did anyone know that his own downfall was soon to come...

Lucien was, at this point, a widely known, highly skilled, and very focused, mature individual. His powers and combat ability had flowered, and he set his sights on his greatest challenge yet- an evil wizard who, the rumors said, was immortal, had power so great he was untouchable, and would never be defeated. This wizard had enslaved many a clan and installed himself as the ruler of them all, and no one had even come close to overturning his rule- the dragons under his iron talons had lost hope. Lucien was a truly great dragon and a hero to many... but he was simply not good enough. He made his way into the wizard's territory and challenged him to open combat. The challenge was accepted. The wizard came out, and they bowed to each other before beginning.

As evil as the wizard was, he was honorable- he didn't need to resort to underhanded tactics to win, as Lucien quickly found out. The wizard's power was overwhelming- the paladin fought hard and well, but he could not last. He fell on the field of battle, unconscious but not dead. The wizard lifted his prone body and took him into his lair, and that was the last time anyone saw Lucien, ever again. Eventually, the wizard fell to a greater hero than the paladin had been, and the world forgot the shining dragon Lucien. No one remembered quite who had done heroic things across the realm, and no one really cared. No one- not even his parents. Impossible though it may seem, it is true. How, you ask? We can find out by continuing to follow his tale. But surely, you say, that was end of ill-fated Lucien's story? No, it was not, because he did not perish in the wizard's lair.

When the wizard took Lucien into his lair, he chained up the paladin and waited for him to stir. Soon, he did, and when he had, the wizard patiently explained what was about to happen to him. "I am going to curse you," he rumbled, "in such a way that you will come to wish you had died. You will not suffer eternal pain. You will not be forced to lie, or do evil acts. All that will happen... is that you will disappear. You will vanish from the memories of all who met you, all who knew you, and all who loved you. It will be as if you never existed." And so it was. That curse made the Lucien that was disappear for good. He was free to wander in a world that did not remember him, and could not remember him. He was alone, and always would be.

But Lucien refused to give up. Even sentenced to a life alone, a life through which he would pass like a shadow, he was determined to continue living. It would not be an easy life, or a happy life. He could never again have friends or a family- they would forget ever talking to him as soon as he walked away. But he could still live a life of goodness. He could still fight evildoers. He would not do good deeds for the glory, or the recognition, but because it needed to be done. Because if he didn't, no one else would. Even if no one knew he existed. Even if no one remembered he ever existed.

"Hello," called a soft voice from the doorway. Vyral looked up from the bowl of water she was holding steady in her claws to see a male Skydancer in white armor who looked oddly similar to her. His mouth was curved in a smile, but his eyes were full of pain and grief. She felt a strange, fleeting sense of déjà vu as she looked at him. "Do I know you?" she said warily, setting down her bowl gingerly. "Are you... Vyral?" he asked, saying her name with a strange tenderness. She nodded. "That's me, alright. But I'm sort of busy here. So, unless you need something, mister...?" "No, no," he said, smile failing. Now he just looked... incredibly sad. "I... I don't. I'll leave you to your scrying." And as he turned to leave, he added, in a soft voice filled with grief, "My name is Lucien. Though I doubt that'll mean anything to you."

Vyral was left staring at her empty doorway, wariness and concern and confusion all tangled up within her. Why was she feeling this way? Had something bad happened? She'd just talked to a dragon... but the details were already blurring in her mind. It must not have been important. She shook off the strange feelings and returned to her work. "Nothing happened," she said to herself firmly. "Nothing happened at all."

If she had heard the quiet weeping from her forgotten son as he left, she might have changed her mind. But the wind carried the sounds of his grief away from her, away from everyone, way up into the endless blue sky.
