Caryatid was born into a somewhat unusual family - at least by Coatl standards - because while her father's plumage sprouted in three perfectly vibrant shades of blue-green, her mother's primary hue was pale and listless; a flat white which marked her as an outcast in normal society. Yet instead of shunning her, Caryatid's father loved her. He accepted the fact that a life with her would mean a life away from the ancestral homeland, and he accepted that going with her would mean leaving his clan and joining hers - an established group of 'jinxes' with similarly pale plumage which wandered from territory to territory in search of a place where they wouldn't be driven out by the local Coatl population. Every so often during their travels, an individual, pair, or sometimes even an entire family would break away, either believing that they had found such a place, or after being offered shelter by a non-Coatl clan in the area. Boasting the same dull primary plumage as her mother and sister, Caryatid grew up well acquainted with the prejudice and superstitions held by the main body of her species. Yet, to a degree, she was also sheltered from such things. She had an entire clan of 'misfits' to support her. Furthermore, there are benefits to growing up as a nomad. For one, the young Coatl's close and constant association with dragons outside her species - the clans her own traded and negotiated with as they moved across Sornieth - meant that she was able to get a better grasp on the common dragonic tongue than some Coatls ever do. She also benefited Caryatid knew no other life until she was well out of her childhood. WIP Change from Coatl to tundra - retain Coatl intelligence/native language/temperament & habits, gain tundra body/sense of smell/hearing. Crush on Intarsia. |
