When Clan Lukra moved to its new home, it found the area already occupied by Barholme, a fervent worshipper of the Arcanist. Rather than evict him, Lioska and Nesita asked him to join them. Barholme came to consider himself the religious soul of the clan. He devoted himself ceaselessly to the glory of his god and could often be found in rituals and sacraments that no one else quite understands.

Barholme was quick to insist that others follow the teachings of the Arcanist -- teachings that no other dragon has ever heard. He claimed that he sees his god's will in the shape of the stars, in the lights of the Starwood, in the threads of magic running through the Isles. Barholme's way of the Arcanist mostly involved many crystals and complex magic. He was an adept mage and studied magical theory closely, since he considers magic the Arcanist's primary domain.

Unfortunately, Barholme's beliefs ultimately proved too dogmatic for Clan Lukra. His hobby of mind control and insistence that shape-shifting is a deadly sin brought him into conflict with Elain, whom he wished to see executed. When Aridatha and the rest of the clan refused this, he eventually took matters into his own hands, attempting to murder Elain and the incoming Oracle Achzina. As punishment, the clan sealed his magic, leaving him unable to cast even the simplest spell, and exiled him.

He came back with a vengeance, however -- literally. Robbed of his inborn magic, Barholme instead managed to take the Shade into his body, giving him new and strange powers. He used these to rain disaster on Clan Lukra and in particular to murder Aridatha before vanishing once more into the woods.
