  origins.
Enoki used to live the life of most any Plague hatchling: he practically bathed in disease from the start, and when no ills befell him, he romped around heedless of the terrible sicknesses that the Wasteland was famous for. His parents adored his resilience and practically made games of it, delighted that their child displayed such heartiness in the face of death on all sides. Enoki’s mother would ask him to explore different putrid regions to bring home ingredients for her concoctions, and his father would craft great stone creatures for his son to spar with, always watching to see if the wounds Enoki garnered would become infected. And they did in a way, though they always healed. But before the wounds fully closed, various kinds of mushrooms would always collect on the young Coatl’s hide, bright as could be.
The only dragon who found these growths odd was Forrest. Enoki resented the other dragon at first. Forrest’s sharp tongue was constantly used to abuse Enoki’s family, and more than once, Enoki and Forrest rolled through the Wasteland, fighting over who was in the right. As time wore on, though, their fights became playful and sporting rather than bitter and hostile. They were brothers as if they shared the same blood, even though Forrest was from the Viridian Labyrinth, a place that confused Enoki for it’s reverence of life over death.
When the two reached adulthood, they were enlisted into King Razja’s ranks. Enoki was pleased and honored to have been selected for such a task but saw that for some reason Forrest seemed off put by the idea. However, in no time at all, something seemed to have changed his brother’s mind, for Forrest quickly rose in the ranks, leaving Enoki behind. The coatl was saddened to be separated from his brother, but was happy that he was being so successful and so distracted himself with challenges to succeed as well.
However, when the day came and word that Forrest had betrayed the clan, Enoki was the most devastated of all. He had lost sight of his stalwart, if caustic companion, for apparently he’d changed into a traitor in the years that they’d been apart. Enoki retired from his position, unable to deal with his feelings over the situation. For weeks, he fell into a dark slump. His eager nature deserted him, and as if to fill the hole Forrest left, he became surly and snappish. His parents would not put up with this change in their son, though. They were grieving, too, and did not think it right for Enoki to lash out at them for something they had no control over. In the hopes of restoring him to his old self, they sent him to the other end of the Wasteland to work with his cousins farming poisonous mushrooms.
The toil and the boisterous nature of Enoki’s cousins at first irked him, and his sullen mood remained. But gradually, their happiness and pleasantries became infectious. Enoki found himself falling in love with the mushrooms around him, and could often be found out with his cousins, hunting for new fungi to bring home to the farm. By the time he returned to his parents, he no longer had any open wounds, but he was still growing all kinds of mushrooms on his shoulders, nestled neatly between his wings. Outside his childhood home, he planted all kinds of mushrooms, poisonous and edible alike, and soon made a small business of selling them to the locals. It wasn’t a full scale operation like his cousins ran, but it was impressive for one coatl, not to mention the love and care Enoki put into it was visible at all times. He lived this way for a couple years, at peace with his life, and all was well.
But he couldn’t forget Forrest, and one winter, when the mushrooms were doing particularly poorly, he decided to close up shop and go out into the world in search of his best friend. He figured that there must be more to his brother’s story and that he would not simply betray the clan as he had for no reason. Packing for the journey was almost more grueling than setting out to sea, if Enoki were asked. He meant well, but forgot a number of necessary provisions that his parents reminded him of at the last minute. Again and again his plans were delayed by his over-eagerness to be going, and when he finally collected all the necessary items for a sea journey, a storm rolled in. Impatiently he waited for the opportunity to set out, and when it finally arose, he scarcely remembered to say a goodbye to his parents before raising the anchors and sailing away.
The venture was almost a hopeless one. Time and again, he was forced to return to ports of Sornieth to replenish his supplies. His small crew for hire grew restless, hearts aching for homes and families and friends. But after a year and some of searching, Enoki finally found a sign of dragons amongst the tundra of the Icefields, just as rumored. Being out amongst the Icefields was not something that Enoki had expected of his brother, but it was the last place he had to look, and Enoki’s heart nearly burst with excitement. He knew his friend was there. He simply knew it.
And he was right. After some blundering through the tundra, Enoki was finally reunited with Forrest, not to mention given the opportunity to meet Everglade. Enoki soon learned of Forrest’s history and how it had been his plan to betray Razja all along for his evil deeds. Forrest expressed no desire to leave, and perhaps a little bit because Everglade quite liked both dragons, Enoki sent his hired crew back to Sornieth, taking only the mushrooms on board for himself. Now, he has resumed his business of spreading mushrooms throughout the world, this time, somehow amongst the tundra,, and though he is somewhat prone to calling too much attention to himself and the clan as he traverses the Icefields with the nomadic clan, something that deeply troubles Forrest, he is happier than ever and has no intention of leaving his brother’s side again.
