" ..." No more dreams, he thought. They woke him nightly. Seeing the messenger fall in a crumpled heap to the ground. Running over to him as the murderer fled. Tripping, slathering blood inadvertently all over his scales. The angry mob. The stake. The kindhearted chapel-cleaner who freed him and died for it. He blinked up at the full moon. Beside him in the open field slumbered Igneous, her Mulberry wings folded like a bat’s. He gently touched her face and thought of Spirit. How kindly the Warren had taken him in. How innocently they all laughed and smiled around him, not knowing his past. Or the past imposed on him. II. Still, there were many travelers. His heart always seized, cramped whenever they came by. The Warren met them with great love and kindness, never any suspicion. But one night, it happened. An old, grizzled white Snapper looked up from the campfire, saw him, and frowned. “Say…aren’t you…?” “A simple traveler,” Delta said in clipped tones. “You look awfully familiar.” The Snapper cocked her head. Delta’s chest cramped. “Wouldn’t know why.” Then he noticed something…strange. An imposing, purple-black Imperial, who sat on the edge of the group, was smiling knowingly and not saying much. That smile was far too knowing. An electric jolt shot through Delta’s body and made him shiver. That form, those colors: he was the true murderer of the messenger! The wait seemed to last for eons—laughter around fires in the Warren lasted for hours. But finally the group began to disperse. Slowly, slowly. After Igneous and Spirit traded glances, then looked at Delta, who nodded— He and the murderer were alone. “So,” Delta said casually. “Yes, it was me.” The Imperial laughed softly. “But they’ll never believe you.” Delta ground his teeth together. “They won’t have to.” He drew his knife and made to stab him, leaping over the roaring flames. The Imperial’s eyes widened. He fell back, and— III. No more dreams. Igneous was shaking him. “Wake up, Delta. Everyone’s staring.” They were around the dinner fire. He must’ve fallen asleep because he slept so poorly. None of the dragons there matched the description, and none regarded him with any special curiosity. After a beat, they returned to their uproarious conversation. Breathing out slowly, he leaned on Igneous’ shoulder. Not tonight. But soon. In the barracks, under investigation for murder |
