MAGNUS
"Give it all even when you've nothing to give."

All his life, Magnus had heard of the Search: the proud journey guardian dragons made when they came of age to find their Charge, the one thing they’d spend their lives protecting. His father had made the journey, as had his mother, his grandparents, and their grandparents… The tradition was as old as guardians themselves.
There was no teary farewells when a guardian in Magnus’s clan left to go on their Search; only the most sensitive of the dragons even bothered to say goodbyes. Everyone, even those with not a drop of guardian blood in them, knew what an integral part of their life a young dragon’s Search was. And although it was somewhat rare, sometimes a Search would bring a dragon right back home, whether to guard an individual, place, or the clan itself. A Charge could be anything, and as soon as a guardian saw its Charge, there was no going back. Either they protected it with their life, or they had no life left to live. Simple as that.
Magnus began his Search early one morning in spring, when he was just starting to grow to his full size. The elders still stood tall over him, but Magnus was now too large to play with the hatchlings. It was time. The sun rose over the horizon, illuminating the Observatory of the Arcanist in the distance. The clan gathered, and Magnus’s mother cleared her throat.
“It is agreed that Magnus shall begin his Search today. Are there any objections?”
There was silence, and then the leader of the clan stepped forward, a gnarled old guardian who seemed to be as old as the Earthshaker himself. “Let the Eleven guide you in your Search, and may the Arcanist’s wisdom light your path.”
The clan echoed his words, and Magnus swallowed. He wasn’t nervous, not really, but it was nevertheless a daunting task. A potential lifetime of Hide and Seek, one that would lead him all over the lands, and through it all the uncertain risk that he would fail. He pushed his worries aside and answered, “And yours as well.”
He turned and took to the skies, heading at first east, with no clear destination in mind.
That would be the last he saw of his birth clan.
Years later, Magnus circled back into Arcane territory, much larger than when he left and much, much more tired. Although he knew sometimes guardians spent their whole lives looking for a Charge, the weight of a nomadic life was pressing down on him. He longed for a home; a place he could rest his wings near a warm fire and not worry about Searches or Charges. He touched down, shaking out his limbs to return some feeling to them. After a short nibble on his store of food, he was almost ready to take back off. He almost did.
But then he saw her, confused, looking everywhere but him, white fur rustling in the wind.
Later, he would know her as Mage: his matriarch, leader, friend, and more. For now, he only knew her for what his soul trembled to know: his Charge. This was who he would protect with life and limb.
This small mirror dragon, barely as tall as his legs, was his destiny.
