Biography

MAGE
"Knowledge is power, and power has a price."
f2oI7Q2.png

Mage always knew she was different from the other dragons in her clan, even when she first hatched. It wasn't hard to spot the difference between them, after all; no other dragon shared her distinct purple hue, nor the stark white wool that grew on her chest and tail. She was different, yes, but she could never accuse her parents of not loving her.
It wasn't until one day a few months after her hatching when winter fell and the pond froze over that she saw how different she truly was. As she looked down at her reflection, she saw not the deep blue eyes of her water-loving parents, but a dark pink that shook her to her very soul. Arcane? How was that possible; she had lived in the Tidelord's domain for as long as she could remember! But then again...
She had never loved the water as the others of her clan did. She would rather stay above the surface, examining the tide pools and learning more about the life that lived in their depths. She didn't relish the day; she instead loved the night and the stars and all the secrets they held. It all made a sort of sick sense, as she looked back on it.
That night, when she returned home, her parents sensed a change in her. Mage picked at her dinner alone, instead of joining in on the revelry of another successful hunt. It wasn't until later that night, however, when the hatchlings had gone to sleep and the moon was high, that the young dragon voiced her discontent.
She told them of what she had seen in the ice, of the differences she had seen between her and her clanmates, even of the theories she had come up with: was she a mutant? An anomaly? Nothing, however, could have prepared her for the truth.
“You're not our hatchling by birth,” her mother said gently. “We found your egg one day, when we were scavenging in Arcane territory. We found no sign of any dragons around, so we... we took you back to our own lair. Raised you as our own. Your father and I knew we could never have our own children a long time ago; we saw you as a blessing from the Eleven. Our own sort of miracle.”
Mage was silent for a moment, taking it all in. Then:
“Why didn't you just tell me?”
Her parents laughed, her father's deep baritone mixing with her mother's lilting soprano, and soon Mage's alto was added to the mix—a harmony of family weaving through the air.
After a few more months, Mage knew she could no longer deny her heritage. She left the Sea of a Thousand Currents and flew without rest to the Starfall Isles. As soon as she touched down in the Crystalspine Reaches, she knew: this was home. This was where she belonged. Her fur bristled with anticipation, and she turned to find a place to rest her head--only to bump right into a young guardian. His bright pink eyes studied her, and after a bit, he let out a chuckle.
"Can I help you?" She asked, rightly confused.
"I've been Searching for my Charge for years. Who knew she'd be so small?"
Mage's fur puffed out in indignation. "Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, Mister...?"
The guardian bowed and closed his eyes. "I am called Magnus. My life is yours, my Charge."
The mirror dragon tilted her head up and looked at him--really looked at him. A moment passed.
"Is there nothing I can do to change your mind? I didn't really set out looking for a protector of any sort. I just came to learn."
Magnus opened his eyes. "A scholar, eh? I'm not one myself, but no, I'm afraid you're stuck with me. To leave you now... It would not only bring the deepest shame to my name, but I would no longer have a purpose. I did not mean to burden you with my presence, my Charge."
Mage almost felt sorry for the dragon; he truly did seem to mean well, and she knew enough of guardians to know about the Search. "I do need a guide, and you seem knowledgeable enough." She softened. "Alright, Magnus." She drew closer and he relaxed, seemingly with her mere presence. She did not wish to admit it, but she felt it, too; the bond between guardian and Charge is strong, after all. "My name is Mage."
"Mage..." He tested the name on his tongue. "Well, my lady," the twinkle in his eyes returned. "Where do we begin?"
