______ In the beginning, there was the Lightweaver. And, those in the Sunbeam Ruins often joke, so was Tantus. Everyone considers him part of the natural landscape, carving out his place among the fallen pillars and lit glades.

He came to the Ruins years ago, during his Search, when something distinct yet mysterious pulled him there. A veteran Guardian who had seen many skirmishes, and participated in even more, he was not unused to the unfamiliar. Still, something about this new place- this new feeling with no name- left him restless.

And so the first few decades were anything but quiet for the dragon. Though something in the Ruins called out to his spirit, he felt his Search had not ended. Desperately, he examined every nook and cranny of the Ruins. He pawed at the ground, wearing thin the soil beneath his claws. He even dared to approach the Lightweaver herself, as close as he could get, and though her presence was awe-inspiring, he did not feel the right connection that a Guardian felt with their charge.

Despite these setbacks, in the Ruins he stayed, impatiently awaiting the day where his spirit would settle and he would figure out what made the Ruins pull him so close- yet so far- to the end of his Search.

It wasn't until Ragtag showed up that he began to find peace. A greedy, but well-meaning Fae, Ragtag formed a strong bond with Tantus. Through their similarities- their restlessness and confusion of their place in life, their need for something more but never knowing how to get it- they became thick as thieves, and fell in love in the way only old souls could. And as they grew closer, Tantus felt his spirit tug towards something. His Search was not over, but the first step had been taken.

______ As the years flew by, more dragons came to the Ruins- wayward things with nowhere else to go. Every size, shape, color and breed, and every one of them were confused, lost and lonely. Tantus took them in without any questions. After all, he knew what it was like to not know where one was going.

As more dragons came from their own corners of the world, something of a family was formed. Tantus became a father figure for so many lost souls. He counseled young lovers’ squabbles, babysat hatchlings- he became a shoulder to cry on and a friend to depend on. His heart grew as much as his brood did.

It was late one night, as he lay with Ragtag in the evening, looking out over the young and old that he considered his own, that he finally felt his Search was complete. His charge wasn't exactly a place, wasn't exactly a person. It was something in-between. His charge were those who came looking for someone to guide them, to keep them safe, to help them grow and mature. His charge was a family.

A bit unconventional, he thought as he laid his head upon the ground and closed his eyes. But his heart had finally settled and that said something. That same night, the Lightweaver gave a soft trill into the dark. Something in the air had changed. Something beautiful had just begun.

Tantus can still be found taking care of his family. A stern parental figure, though he is often seen playing with the hatchlings among the Ruins, and sharing laughs with the elders. And each night, he makes sure to let all of his children they are loved, and they will never be alone again.
