It's hard being a construct, not that a construct is supposed to know that. Opal is the creation of Genesis, the resident tinkerer and wizard of wonders. It would appear, on the surface, that Opal exists only to prove that Genesis can create life and to be the permanent scribe for Gabrielle's ceaseless calculations and paperwork. Since Gabrielle's short snapper arms and rigid, immobile claws aren't quite on par with the dexterity required of a writer, she willingly took Opal into her den to be her assistant - or rather, her obedient servant. Opal has filled this position unquestioningly, her base programming and 'personality' suited down to the steel bone for such work.

Most dragons consider her uncomfortable to be around, shying away from her when she appears among them. The cold, robotic presence of her moving but not quite living body has caused many dragons night terrors. Among the rampant rumors about Opal's existence and creation is the horrifying tale that she has the heart of a real dragon, pulled from the still-warm chest and inserted into the cold rigidity of Genesis' golems. Although the rumor scoffed at by most dragons, some cling to the belief and it makes Opal very unpopular. Her most verdant naysayers are other pearlcatchers who claim she is an abomination. The rumor of her dragon's heart persists with them, often leaving them unsettled after an encounter with her. Many pearlcatchers have speculated the heart in question is that of another pearlcatcher.

Gabrielle herself is prone to fits of discomfort around her obedient servant. Because of her large workload she doesn't often have time to be diplomatic. Her orders are terse and demanding, often coming across as harsh. Opal takes the insults and injuries without complaint, willingly creating lists and writing missives for the snapper unable to do it herself. There have been no incidents. No incidents, at least, until quite recently.

The first was after a particularly eventful outing into the Colony proper. Opal was harassed by several pearlcatchers from a distance before being ushered back to the den to write out tax receipts. As she was settling down behind the desk, writing quill in claw, Gabrielle tossed an off-hand remark that seemed to sour the air. Opal dropped the quill and refused to write a word until Gabrielle left the room in frustration and slight concern. Several more incidents occurred, with Opal growing bolder as the time passed. When at last the pearlcatcher golem opened her mouth to speak a defiant answer came from her lips, hissed through her teeth by her own tongue.

When an understandably unsettled Gabrielle brought this to the attention of Genesis, the imperial whisked the golem away to his lair under pretense of repairing her. His reputation for creating golems with personalities is somewhat widespread, though a golem with opinions has not yet been seen by outside eyes. He has yet to figure out what he did right, or perhaps wrong, with this golem. Opal seems to be getting closer and closer to true sentience every day, causing Genesis no end of joy and Gabrielle no end of misery. Many documents must be written and it is difficult to do so when the writing instrument speaks its mind.
