There once was a birth foretold by the Windsinger, one that he said would make the heavens sing. When Iparis first opened her eyes, the winds in the heavens swirled and swelled, sending strong winds to howl a melody so forceful and so strong that all of the world stopped to listen.

Iparis grew to be strong, much like how the heavens that told of her birth were. But this strong warrior, unaware of the legend she would become, only wanted to spend her days frolicking in the sun, her wings slicing through the wind, and her nights beside her furry friends. But as a warrior she wasn’t supposed to be like that, everyone expected her to be strong. At least those that knew her and the prophecy about her did.

When she was of age, her family gave her a quest, to go into the forest and bring back the hide of the great wolf that called it home. Oh Iparis did go, and she did find the wolf. But when it looked at her with eyes that held wiseness, she hesitated, stopped and instead of doing what she was told, flew away.

Iparis flew south, down to the blistering cold lands. There she learned how to truly survive, until her heart was as cold and hard as the ice around her. Soon enough, the legendary gilded warrior got bored of her bleak, white surroundings and flew. She never stayed long in one place, but everywhere she went, she left dragons in awe and wonder until finally, her story was being told throughout the world.

But even though she could have anything she wanted, Iparis still felt like there was something missing in her life. With a weird feeling in her gut, she set out for a territory to conquer. Her flight had led her to the Shifting Expanse, the home of the Stormcatcher and her brood. Upon arriving there, Iparis felt a surge of energy run through her, leaving her feeling weird and strangely restless. The need to hunt and attack something was growing inside her and one day, she happened upon two dragons being attacked by a horde of beastclans. She noticed that one of them was wounded, and since the bloodlust inside her was raging on, she went berserk and let loose on the horde of beastclans. The two dragons stared at her, their jaws open in shock. Finally, one of them, a female Fae with blue splotches on her wings, spoke:

“Thank you for saving us,” she said, bowing before Iparis.

Iparis’ pale green eyes narrowed in observation. The dragon before her was really tiny compared to her, and Iparis couldn’t help but find that adorable. But she didn’t say anything of course, merely bobbing her head as if to say ‘no problem’.

The other dragon, a Skydancer with dark red colors, spoke in probably the gentlest voice Iparis ever heard, “You must come with us. Rest for a night or two with our clan, let us show how thankful we are.”

The warrior fidgeted. She wasn’t used to staying with others, and the thought of staying with tens of others made her nervous. Still, two pairs of bright, hopeful and full of gratitude eyes stared at her and she couldn’t say no.

So Iparis left with them, and was shocked when everyone in the clan welcomed her with open arms, as if she was always one of them. She stayed for a night, and another, and another and without knowing it, had grown attached to the large group of dragons that she now considered family.

As she looked on at them, she realized that this was what she’d been missing: a family.

Now the myth of the Gilded Warrior is still heard of throughout the whole world, but this time, it’s a story of friendship and family, and no longer just a violent tale of bloodshed and sadness. Because now, the warrior knows that strength isn’t how many foes you vanquish; it’s being being there for those who need you, and for accepting the fact that no one can make it alone in this world.
