Biography

| ABADDON | [♫] Light-Maker
{ Sword Instructor | He/Him | Bi }

Abaddon was once a warlord of terrible temperament and avaricious nature. Raised by a callous father, taught to take and seize what he desired, he cast aside such frivolous things as "love" and "honor" and became twisted by greed.

The only good in his life was his younger brother, Apollyon, who remained loyally at his side, even as he ceased to be the man Apollyon had once loved.

With time, the strain of his own corruption began to wear on Abaddon. He tired of taking, he tired of seizing—but tyranny was all that he had ever known, and so he carried on, until, at last, his trusted Royal Council turned against him. They demanded, "Step down, Abaddon, and allow your brother to ascend in your place!"

Abaddon, ignorant and wrathful, refused their demand. So it came to pass that he and Apollyon crossed blades. Apollyon fought him reluctantly, begging with his brother to see reason, but Abaddon did not listen. His fear of losing the only life he knew deafened him.

Finally, he struck his brother down, wounding him severely. Only then, as he raised his weapon to deliver the finishing blow, did he surrender. He could not take his own brother's life. Rather than commit such a heinous act, he relinquished the crown and fled into exile.

Abaddon spent the following cycle in isolation, seeking a comfortable place where an old dragon like him might find rest. Somewhere along the way, he stumbled across and partnered with the seer-mage Priyanka, who became like a sister to him in their travels. Together, they sought stability, and found it within Feldspar.

It was there, many long, peaceful years later, that Abaddon met Shard the Radiant. Initially, his soul still black from his time as a warlord, he sought to use Shard to gain power and influence. However, Shard's kindness and warmth soon won him. Abaddon softened, the walls he had built around his heart with fearful hands crumbled, and he allowed himself to love deeply and genuinely once more.

More so than any dragon, more so even than Priyanka, Shard the Radiant changed him.

As was tradition within Shard the Radiant's home clan, there came a time when he chose service under the Arcanist. Though Abaddon pleaded with him to defy this tradition, to stay with him, even to marry him, Shard had made up his mind—and Abaddon, out of respect for his beloved's heritage, accepted his decision.

Stricken with grief, unsure of how to live without his light, Abaddon took to wandering Feldspar territory in solitude. On one such excursion, he spied a flash of pink in the undergrowth. Tenderly, he plucked the Arcane egg from its nest of grass and down and watched, awe-struck, as brilliant fuchsia light seeped from the spiderweb of cracks across its surface. There, in his trembling hands, it hatched.

The child, having known nothing but the darkness before its birth, imprinted on Abaddon, and try as he might to convince Dreamweaver to take it, they would not. "He has chosen you," they told him, "and so you must raise him."

Abaddon knew he was not father material and had he found the egg before meeting Shard the Radiant, he might have washed his hands of the child within then and there. Yet, as he stared into its soft magenta eyes, he saw a spark of something familiar in them and knew then that this boy had been sent by Shard the Radiant to him as a sign, as a symbol of their love, which spanned across entire planes of reality.

Thusly, he named the child Shard.

The following phase, Abaddon bore witness to Shard Junior and the twin Shards' failed attempt at unexalting Shard the Radiant. It was his voice that brought the Radiant through the veil between planes, and, for a brief moment, he was able to bathe in his lover's light as he once had.

Then Shard the Radiant withered in his arms.

He climbed the steps of the Observatory in silence and returned his light into the Arcanist's embrace. With the Radiant went Fragment and Sliver, and the young, unnamed scion, still fresh and new in this world. Shard Clan's pact with their god came to an abrupt and violent end as Lutia, overwhelmed with grief at the loss of her son, Horizon, activated the Chalcedony Seat. Shard Clan fled east, to the Sunbeam Ruins, where they would be safe among their allies.

In the phases following the exodus, Abaddon has healed. He spends much of his time with Shard Junior and his grandsons, Jorah and Sirius, doting on them as a father does. The guilt of the part he played in the exodus still weighs heavily on Junior's mind. It is a trauma he will not soon forget, one Abaddon is determined to see him through. There is no one in this world Abaddon loves more than his child, the child Shard the Radiant blessed him with.

When he is not reaffirming his love for his son, Abaddon can often be found in Aphaster lands with Telos, Fragment's wife and the clan's Morning Queen. Each of them lost loved ones to the plan and to the exodus that followed; they can seek comfort in one another that they cannot seek from anyone else. He dotes on her, almost as much as he does on his son.

Apollyon has also carved a fresh niche in Abaddon's life. Prior to Mistral Jamboree, he arrived, unannounced, in the village square, seeking the brother he had lost so long ago to ruinous politics. Once reunited, it was as if they had spent no time apart at all. Their relationship now rekindled, Apollyon makes regular visits from his kingdom in the north to Feldspar lands, and considers his people allied with theirs.
