Silverglow Meditate Discipline
"To coat oneself in silver, shows great discipline"

When the coatl was a hatchling, he showed great promise in his magic. His mother and father fostered him well, and his plumage grew in bright, brilliant iridescent blues and greens and purples, as vibrant as a firebird, as agile in the air as any swallow, and he was sure he would find a home with his fellows when the time came, perhaps a mate, perhaps many companions. He set off with great hope.

It became clear, in the liminal space between clans, between homes, that Kailo's magic was abnormal. It began to sting his claws with use, his feathers grew ragged, their roots dead or tormented by shapeless energy that he could not understand how to control. They began to fall out, left him dizzy and off-balance, unable to fly, until they were replaced, in his solitude and shame with new growth. Except these new feathers were wrong. They were too dull, their iridescence was lost, the colors were there but he found himself unrecognizable. He tried again and again to restore their brilliance, sought healers in foreign clans and desperately requested their help, but every time he used his magic, in self-defense, in fun, in battle, in whatever work he could accomplish, his hide cracked, his feathers rejected again and grew back, duller and softer. Kailo, despairing and in pain, fled into the depths of an ice cave near his birth clan's home, sure that they would never recognize him or accept him were he to return there.

There, in the blue-ice depths of the glacial cave, surrounded by black shapes in the ice that as a hatchling he had always assumed to be merely rocks or natural variations. Kailo's magic worked.

He tried to light his way, even such a simple act had begun to elude him and he had nearly resigned himself to darkness when the thread of magic he'd tried to spark returned, and with it, the luminous shadow of another dragon. His claws didn't ache and bleed, his feathers stayed as gray as before, but they stayed, and the luminous ghost slipped through a crack in the ice wall and followed him, illuminating the remains imprisoned there. Bones, ragged freeze-dried flesh, bits of clothing, but most significantly of all, dragons. Dragons with no eyes, dragons with their skin shrunk tight and discolored, dragons with broken wings, tableaux of dragons who had fallen in battle, once-red arcs of thrashing blood that had fallen on the ice black and opaque in the ghost's pale light. And Kailo was not afraid.
He practiced in the dark, there, for months, learning on his own what his limits were, how to speak more effectively with the dead, listening to their stories, those that could tell them, over and over and over again. Those who could not speak replayed their last acts in an endless half-moving scene that he began to learn to replay whenever he wished to, dragons who had fallen at different times moving through one another like the ghosts they now were. Those who could speak could not understand what or who he was, and he became their priest, the tunnels there a sort of cathedral monument to the centuries of fallen within.

He made many test trips at first, making sure that his abilities would not leave him when he left the cave, using the magic lessons he'd received as a hatchling to enchant amulets and clothing that he obtained on short trips to trading areas (swathed in robes) and let him maintain his magic without harming himself. He will always return to the dead in Ice Flight's cavernous interior territories, but now he can wander safely, and defend himself, and help bereft families and clans gain peace in the knowledge that their families and mates and friends have moved on, with his assistance.

His plumage grows grayer and duller with every use of his magic, and he conceals his eyes with a blank silver sheet to shield from ill-will (both ghostly and living). His feet are silver-dipped, as soft as real skin, but whether they are really his or replacements due to frostbite is not something he will discuss. He is self-sufficient, but he wanders in hope of completing some nebulous part of his training, wondering if perhaps he will one day be able to do more than speak for the dead, wondering if he will be more than a ferryman to guide them to rest, hoping that one day he may overcome it. His feathers may one day begin to go lighter and lighter, maybe he will fade into a ghost of his own, but for now he seeks a home.
