You could destroy them. You could make them fear you. The music of their screams would fill the night- “Two bundles of seafood, please. Make sure it’s fresh.” Vector spoke over the bony parasite clinging to her wings as she ordered food to refill her personal rations. Her days were often like this. The peculiar creature would whisper things in her ear, things it wanted her to do or say. They were all horrible. She had grown used to it, and now went about her day with as much normalcy as she could manage. It was annoying, yes, but somehow she could not bear to get rid of it. Why? Well… Imagine what it would feel like to make them tremble at your feet. They’ve been so rude to you, right? I could help you. It would be so much fun to- “Not really. Make that three bundles of seafood.” Sometimes dragons asked why she didn’t at least cover the thing up. It was rather unsightly, after all, and she had never liked to show it off. Yet the creature did not want to be concealed, and there was little she could do about the subject. Once she had tried some thin, tattered silks, just to test the waters. And, well…the parasite ate them. So much for that. Don’t you want to teach them a lesson? I’ve seen them look at you distastefully. You could ruin their own beauty, you could- “That’s your fault. Keep the change, thank you.” Perhaps it all came down to the fact that she was lonely. She hated, hated, hated being alone, but she couldn’t bear to place a burden on other dragons. So she kept to herself for the most part, save for the creature that was her constant companion. She would never admit it, but she needed the parasite. Who else would talk to her in the dark hours of the night, or accompany her into any danger regardless of risk? No one. The sun is too bright. Imagine if all light was extinguished. Eternal darkness, forever and always. The whole world, in an empty void- “Yep. We’re home.” Vector dropped the fish in a chilled box in the corner and lowered herself wearily into her nest. She was tired, and she wanted a nap. Thankfully, the creature usually let her sleep. Usually. Think of all the damage you could do if you’d only try! You’re bigger than most of them… The creature shifted to peer at Vector’s face. She wasn’t responding. Was she asleep already? You know they don’t like you. Some of them fake it, but none of it is true. I’ve always been there for you, though. We could do so much together, you and I… Soft snores drifted up from the sleeping ridgeback. Sweet dreams. |

The weeds of our world root deep into the soil. You may think that you have beaten it back, but they linger underground. Watching and waiting. Prowling until an exposed back twists to them. Unwilling and comfortable.
