Layla
lei-lah
Distant | Mimic of the Toxic Wastes | Scout
tumblr_inline_nwr25xxXZM1sgemal_250.png

Layla is a strange creature, at least to most of the dragons who interact with her. Other Nocturnes say she seems perfectly normal, if a bit hostile, but to everyone else she is a snapping, snarling, cold-shouldered, noisy beast. Rather than speak for herself, Layla often mimics the words of others to suit her needs, even splicing together different voices and phrases if she needs to. Why she relies entirely on Nocturne mimicry is anyone's guess; she seems reluctant to tell much of her past even through her strange manner of speech. For all her parroting of others, it's easy to assume Layla is a simple creature, but to actually think as much is a death sentence around her. Sharp as a nail and quick on her feet, Layla is hard to outpace in any area, and impossible to escape if she's set her sights on you - even with her bad eye.

Zalis The Zalis that flies around the Toxic Wastes has connected with many dragons that have come and gone, but ultimately seems to have attached itself to Layla. When she is out and about it can often be seen flying alongside her, squawking at her and receiving perfectly mimicked replies. Layla doesn't seem particularly attached to the bird, but allows it to come near her and even defends it from predators on the outskirts of the territory. It's as close to a familiar as a dragon like Layla is ever going to get.

Backstory

Layla has not lived an easy life.

Born to a poor clan in the desolate Snowsquall Tundra, she was sent on her way when she was only a juvenile and quickly became entangled with a roaming pack of criminals that had broken free of their prisons elsewhere in the Southern Icefield. Unable to fight back and with nowhere else to go, Layla reluctantly followed them in their travels as they demanded she always look her best and entertain them as they pleased. She was a lovely singer, or so it was said; the criminals enjoyed her songs, but quickly became enraged should she try to speak.

As time passed, Layla made her way into different roaming groups and clans, but always found herself in the same situation as before. Never asked to speak and punished for doing so out of turn, Layla soon learned her voice was only good for singing on command... or mimicking strange sounds to startle her "clanmates" in a petty act of rebellion.

For a time, Layla began to gain some confidence as she learned an impressive arsenal of sounds ranging from snapping twigs to monstrous roars. She found delight in terrifying the others and then playing innocent, and was rarely reprimanded as they could never prove she had done it - her voice was much too gentle for them to believe that she could make such noises. Not much was known of Nocturnes at the time, and she could - and did - use this to her advantage.

Things took a turn for the worse when Layla was pushed off to a new clan with a strict hierarchy, of which Layla was at the bottom. Dragons were separated based on "worth" and "usefulness" and only permitted to interact should the leaders deem it necessary. As Layla struggled to get used to the new environment, she met a young male Spiral who treated her not only as an equal, but even as a superior for her hardships and impressive abilities - though he was technically several tiers above her in the clan's rankings. He would visit her in the night, speaking to her of all manner of things, and in time Layla would bear his children - a momentous occasion that quickly turned sour as the others of the clan learned what had happened.

Infuriated by the Spiral's affections for a lesser dragon, the two were separated, and Layla was ordered to surrender the hatchlings to her leaders so that they would be rehomed with "more fitting" parents. Finally having something worth defending, Layla fought them away from her babies as best she could, but was ultimately struck down. The two hatchlings were swiftly taken, and later Layla would discover that one of them had not survived being separated from her at such a young age; a fact that devastated her to the core.

Layla never saw her living child or the father again.

Emotionally broken, Layla ceased speaking entirely, relying solely on her mimicry to get ideas across. She followed every order she was given with no struggle and saw herself passed along to more clans as time passed further. It seemed any real life she had was over... until the last clan she was a part of passed through the Scarred Wasteland.

As they traveled the Wandering Contagion, Layla overheard the leaders discussing something - something horrendous, something so vile that she refuses to relive the memory. Regardless, it sent her into a rage, and after mimicking a horrible roar that frightened those crowded around her, she began to attack the dragons who tried to hold her back with everything she had. For being on her own, she managed for an impressive amount of time until a blow to her face sent her crashing down to the ground. With blood in one of her eyes she could just barely make out a stranger in shimmering armor flying in and slicing their way through the clan.

Jaxis, who had been out on a hunt, had seen what happened and had come to Layla's rescue. She fought back the dragons that held Layla, then hefted her onto the back of her companion Warcat, determined to get her back to the Toxic Wastes so she could be cared for. Layla was hardly conscious for her rescue, but when she awoke under Samar's care, Jaxis was waiting by her side to see if she would be alright. As the story goes, Jaxis actually spoke to her then, telling her she was safe and no longer held under anyone's rule but her own. She promised the Toxic Wastes were safe and could house her as long as necessary.

To this day, Jaxis is the dragon Layla seems to trust more than anyone, and some say they've even heard the two speaking to each other when they think no one else can hear.
