Biography

--The Northern Light--

Borealis is practically a prisoner in the clan. As a Light dragon, he is horribly shunned by Shadowblood, who makes it painfully clear that he is not allowed to do anything without permission. Arlanna looks at him in pity, apologizing for her leader's harsh behavior. But Borealis does not care: He dreams of one day becoming a strong warrior and beating Shadowblood painfully in some duel to prove his worth. Maybe he would even replace the mirror as Patriarch.

But that's all a fool's dream.

---

If it weren't for Borealis sneaking out one night, Shadowblood may have died to his sudden crippling sickness. Due to this, Shadowblood has started treating Borealis like a proper member of the clan. Borealis, for a time, acted as a sort of treasurer to account for the treasure they had on hand until they started sending out parties to search for healers. When the sickness was cured, he went back to acting as the treasurer, occasionally having assistance from Edith, who was quite good at cataloging the clan's purchases.

Mate: Luminous, originally was Riptide (changed mates in May of 2018)

For the longest time, Borealis knew he was born of the light, knew he was never to see it again. It was better than dying, to be trapped in the dark for all time, but he longed for the sun nonetheless. He should have spent his childhood warming his wings in the heat of the day, flying through the world in the hazy dusk. Instead, though, he was a prisoner.

It was Shadowblood's decision. Clan Dark-Blood's leader had never been kind to Light dragons, and Borealis was no exception. It didn't matter that Truthseeker and Arlanna brought him to the clan as a weak, starving hatchling without a family. It didn't matter that he was so young that he had only the faintest memories of his true home. Shadowblood made no effort to return him to whatever long since forgotten place Borealis might have called home, and he made no effort to integrate the hapless Mirror pup into the clan.

So Borealis became a creature of the dark. For eons, only three dragons even knew of his existence: Shadowblood, Truthseeker, and Arlanna. The latter two were kinder than the clan's leader, making sure Borealis was cared for. Under their kind watch, he never went hungry or thirsty, and if he fell ill, they could be relied upon to heal him, to restore his health to what it ought to be. It was the closest thing to love that he knew, and he clung to it as best he could even though he hungered for more. He held a faint grudge against them, too, despite their care. For all they did for him, they never succeeded in changing Shadowblood's mind. They never secured his freedom from the dark, and he couldn't even be sure that they had tried. That alone gnawed at his heart every night as he lay down to sleep and dream of freedom.

With time, though, he redirected his grudge to let it rest on Shadowblood alone. Clan Dark-Blood's leader had yet to change his stance after what felt like a lifetime to Borealis, and Borealis began to dream of becoming a warrior. It was a tempting dream, one that filled the empty waking hours between meals. He imagined himself growing strong, stronger than Shadowblood, and then he imagined himself hurling Shadowblood into the dirt, besting the all-powerful leader with his own raw strength. It was a dream, a far-fetched dream, but he held it dear all the same. It fueled him through the dark and gave him courage.

Most importantly, though, that dream put him in the right place at the right time.

It was chance that he escaped his hidden prison the night that he did. His presence was perhaps more known by then, but still dismissed, and with other things to worry about, no one in the clan realized he was leaving. No one bothered to look his way. It seemed too good to be true, fleeing the clan and heading into the dark forest night, but the wind on his face was real, and the moonlight was, too. Freedom was his at last.

And then he found Shadowblood lying motionless on the forest floor. All he dreamed about, every conquering moment, reared its head, and Borealis was forced to confront his imagination. Could he best Shadowblood? Could he challenge him?

He could. But not like this.

It almost hurt him as much as it hurt Shadowblood to carry the clan leader back to safety, but as much as he hated to help the leader, he hated more the idea of challenging him and winning only because Shadowblood was near death anyway. It did give him pleasure, though, once Shadowblood recovered, to watch him squirm through his wounded pride as he was forced to acknowledge Borealis. To accept him.

Since then, it has been a rather long road. Shadowblood no longer hides him (and in fact pretends they had never met until the night Borealis saved his life), and has given him some degree of control over clan finances and hoarding. He has also found himself in love a couple times. His first relationship with Riptide ended amicably, and his new relationship with Luminous has just begun.

He still sometimes thinks about what it would be like to return to the light, to be away from the endless dark. He also keeps his dream of challenging Shadowblood close despite the grudging shift in their opinion of one another. One day, between managing the clan's finances, accompanying merchants to ensure fair trade, and helping Luminous collect and store alchemy ingredients, he will make his move. It is only a matter of time.
