Biography

Memorial Urn

Undertaker | Grim subspecies

"In grace and in splendor, I deliver thee into the silent cradle of the earth."

The funerary priest of the City of Lamps is a misbegotten sight. Though his bearing is one of somber dignity, his step is shuffling, uncertain- his eyes a smoking ruin from the first time he saw daylight. Among the Grim, the privilege of being blinded by the sun's sacred rays was reserved for the highest priests. But curiosity is a powerful thing, and Mordraum was only a lowly scribe, to whom the light was forbidden. In blinding himself, he earned his exile, but unlocked a strange new gift- the bones of the dead became as scriven stone to him, and he learned to read the lives of those they had belonged to in their cracks and deformities. There are no secrets that death can hide from the gravekeeper's prying touch.

-his body just, pours black smoke when exposed to sunlight
-scales fragile and powdery like a moth's
-looks spooky but it's not on purpose i mean the dude's blind he can't exactly pick his clothes
-despite this, can still sense the presence of sacridite lanterns, like holy ringing in his ears
-finds their "sound" comforting
-loves books but 2 shy to ask anyone to read them for him :x
-took the gravetender twins under his wing
-sometimes literally if they have to work in the rain. ashland skydancers REALLY don't like getting wet

The Gravetender Twins

Many pilgrims walk the long road to Val-ar-Aion in search of healing and succor. Not all of them make it. Refugees from the bleak Ashfall Wastes themselves, the gravetender twins are kept well-employed beneath the funerary priest Mordraum, putting the remains of the fallen to rest. Their work is grim, and unsavory to the sensibilities of the long-lived Valari. Forbidden from bathing in the river out of fear of pollution, gossips complain of a lingering stench of ash and calamity hanging about the cloaked figures.

"We fled our home when the soot fell in drifts as high as hills and blotted out the sky. Still we choke on the bitter ash of homesickness- such is our lot."

-huge mothering streak
-would give her last crust to someone who needed it more
-stoic & quiet & a bit melancholy
-convinced her bro to stay & tend to the casualties of the calamity that wiped out their home; taking care of the sick/orphaned/injured + burying their dead
-clings to her old Ashfall medicine-lore & traditions; it's all she has left
-loves flowers- they were rare in Ashfall, she is almost envious of how abundant they are here

The Gravetender Twins

The fire's out, but the ashes are still burning.

"It is strange to think that the same sun hangs over both our lands. The sun of our home was small and red, a hateful wound, supplying barely a trickle of light. I can scarce bear to look at this vast, white eye- is it really the same star?"

-v proud; hates having to rely on charity
-protective of his sibling; everything else takes a lower priority
-the more practical and materialistic one
-tiredtm
-distrustful of the Valari; their fair-weather idealism seems shallow after everything he's been through
-plus he just doesn't like being at anyone's mercy
