Atropos takes her job very seriously, and rarely wanders away from the graveyard unless she is needed in the city to help prepare and move a body. Most individuals living in Sylvhurst don't know Atropos' name, and a fair number don't even know she exists.
Atropos makes a point to attend every funeral that takes place in the graveyard, and takes great care in tending to the graves after the families and loved ones have wandered away to grieve. She takes care of the mushrooms that bloom from the graves with a strange sort of reverence.

STORY

xxx

From the moment she was born, it was clear that Atropos took after her mysterious father far more than she did her mother. She was a quiet, calculating child who rarely spoke unless someone asked her a question. Atropos distinctly remembers listening to the whispered conversations between her mother Trickmurk, and her husband Narcissus. As a young child, she knew distinctly that Narcissus was not her father, and that that fact created a small amount of tension within her family.

Despite this, Narcissus cared for Atropos as if she was his own child. Atropos accepted his affection and appreciated his attempts to include her within the family. Even so, Atropos rarely refers to him as 'Dad' or 'Father', even today.

As she grew, the differences between Atropos and her mother simply grew; while Trickmurk attempted to involve Atropos in the Guard and train her to fight, Atropos much preferred to wander around the forest by herself. When the time came for Atropos to either sign up for the Guard or refuse their offer, she made her decision easily.

That night, Trickmurk and Atropos got into a large argument that led to Atropos storming out of the house in a fit of emotion that she had never shown before. She allowed her feet to lead her away from Sylvhurst and into the forest with no care as to where she was going to end up. After wandering for a while, she came upon a clearing full of mushrooms that glowed with a soft light. She stepped carefully around the mushrooms and looked around curiously.

Something caught her eye, and Atropos carefully crouched down to peer underneath one of the large mushrooms. Some wooden carvings were tucked carefully beneath, and as Atropos reached her arm back she snagged onto something metal. Drawing it out, Atropos discovered a locket that was rusted shut. Something seemed to click into place in her mind, and Atropos quickly placed the locket back where she had found it. She knew now that she was standing on or near an old grave.

Atropos said a quick prayer for the deceased and jumped to her feet. She rushed back to Sylvhurst, determined to remember the way back to the graveyard of mushrooms. Once she returned home, her anger at her mother forgotten, Atropos told the story to Narcissus and her mother and quickly led them out there. When Atropos told them her plan to tend to the graveyard, Trickmurk began to argue against it before being silenced by Narcissus. He gave Atropos his blessing and quietly talked to Trickmurk off to the side until she was on board with the idea.

After that, the only thing left was to inform Queen Azraea and King Arguim and to build herself a small cottage out by the graveyard. Narcissus and her mother helped her put together the dark hovel, and Perseus gleefully helped to enchant the property to protect against graverobbers and anyone who came to disturb the guests.

Atropos moved in and quickly began to personalize her cottage. Nowadays, anyone who dies within Sylvhurst has the option to be interred within Atropos' field. Upon each grave, glowing mushrooms sprout and shine with different colored lights once the sun sets. It isn't rare to visit and see Atropos walking amongst the graves talking to people who don't seem to be there. When asked about it, she simply smiles and changes the subject.

RELATIONSHIPS

xxx
20107951p.png
Trickmurk
Mother
Despite their differences, Atropos and her mother's relationship is clearly founded on a deep well of love and respect. As Atropos has gotten situated in her duty, Trickmurk has become more understanding and respectful of her daughter's choice of profession. Every Tuesday, the two of them meet at Atropos' cottage and talk over tea and snacks. When with her mother, Atropos seems to become happier and chattier, while Trickmurk seems to adopt some of Atropos' solemnness.

Narcissus
Step-Father
While Narcissus shows nothing but love for Atropos, she shies away from his affection and feels a bit awkward when he calls her daughter. Narcissus, for his part, tries not to be too upset when Atropos continues to call him 'Narcissus' instead of 'Dad' or 'Father'. Despite Atropos' air of indifference, she truly does care for Narcissus; however, she remembers the whispered arguments about her paternity and always feels a bit of guilt.

Perseus
Half-Brother
Perseus and Atropos' relationship started out rather strained, with Perseus believing that Atropos was ruining his parents' marriage and Atropos feeling like Perseus was always trying to one-up her. However, as the two grew up they became close friends. Even today, anyone who finds themselves talking bad about either of these two siblings will quickly be made aware of the fact that the other sibling doesn't take kindly to bullying. Even on a business level, Atropos is constantly commissioning Perseus to make charms and protections to place near the graves.
