Kanin

Battlemage

Stoic | Calm | Confident | Sage | Mystical | Moralistic

Personality
Kanin left his Altus Clan for two reasons. First he founded the Order of the Everymen. A religous order sworn to protect those in need, to be couragous in times of battle and to be a support for lost souls. Kanin believes that the hidden knowledge of his Species and their ideals and values should be spread not kept sealed away. Because of that his clan looked at him with dissaproval in their eyes but their low numbers prevented them from expelling him. This leads to the second reason he decided it was time to move on. The Altus Pearls are endangered. Their numbers dwelling for the past decades and the times of large armies of Altus Pearls are over for quit some time. A secluded life and inbreeding have led to near extinction. Kanin made it his mission to bring his species back to their old glory and remind the inhabitants of the Sunbeam Ruins who their protectors are.
He wandered the continent of Sornieth from the east to west and north to south, mentoring promising dragons and spreading the credo of the Order of the Everymen. Secretly he searched for Pearlcatchers that could fit his breeding programm or display genes and patterns like an Altus Pearl. And finally one of his informants brought in a report of a clutch of Pearlcatchers born in the Sunbeam Ruins that should look like Altus Pearls. He immediatly flew to his home territory and parted with his latest scholar Tanho at the border of the territory. Tanho had been a good scholar and was ready to be left alone, Kanin was proud to have mentored him. He left his scholar for good and visited the White Prism Clan. And disapointment hit him hard. Only one hatchling of clutch of three came close to an Altus Pearl. He had hoped to be able to work with three Pearlcatchers but now only one small male Pearlcatcher was his hope. He decided to put all his heart in teaching this tiny creature and pray that he would rise to be an excelent representive of an Altus Pearl.

To archieve that goal he needed full access to the clutch and he needed a place in the clan. The Clan Matriarch Ashabellanar knew what he was the moment he set foot in her clan. So he offered her a deal. He would serve the clan as a Battlemage if he would be allowed to keep an eye on this hatchlings. Ashabellanar knew about the battle talent of Altus Pearls and Kanins desire seemed harmless. So he was allowed to stay under the condition he would do no harm to the Imperials of the clan. He still secretly keeps an eye on them. Better safe than have an Emperor at your heels.

Kanin won the trust of the hatchlings parents and startet to teach him from young age on. Jackal was his name (For the life of him he couldn´t convince the parents to name their baby something else) and Kanin mentored him the way he had mentored so many other dragons on his journeys. But mabey he tried to hard, because Jackal would prove to be the greatest dissapointment in his life an his greatest failure.
He doesn´t speak about the reasons why Jackal and he broke contact all together and Kanin ignores Jackals presence altogether. But it is quit obvious. Instead of becoming a role model of an Altus Pearl and Kanins Protegee Jackal had evolved to a sarcastic and ruthless dragon with a " take what you want attitude". Kanin still remains in the clan and continues his project. He encouraged dragons to join the clan and even asked his sister to join him. He planned a special mate for her but he is trying to make them fall for each other rather than force them.

Kanin is always calm and quit and only speaks when he think it is necessary or to pass down knowledge. To some he may seems to be broody, but he is probably just secretly judging you for your low morals. The only one that brings out his darkest side is the arrogant Imperial Feainn( and of course Jackal when they rarely meet). They are clashing constantly and she makes it hard for him to keep to his promise of not harming the clan-resident Imperials.

About the Altus Pearl Subspecies

The Altus were one of the first kinds of Pearlcatcher created by the Lightweaver. Gifted with honest spirits and independent minds, they served the Her loyally, dedicating themselves to defending the Sunbeam Ruins against threats from the Shade and rival flights. As time went on, however, the Altus began to question her judgement.

Eventually, a conflict between Altus Pearls and Imperials ended in an Emperor destroying an entire Altus clan. The Altus blamed the Imperials and were furious when the Lightweaver took the middle road instead of siding with them. Inter-clan disagreements sent the subspecies into decline as many Altus pearls joined other Pearlcatcher clans, losing their distinctive markings and culture over the generations. The rest left the Lightweaver’s service.

Nowadays, a few enclaves of Altus Peals exist, held together by their strong sense of purpose. They live in fortress-like towers guarded by Sunbeam Ursa. They don't trust outsiders to handle knowledge wisely, even viewing the Lightweaver with a suspicious eye. This distrust is combined with arrogance, as they don't easily recognize the potential contributions of dragons unlike them. At their best, Altus Pearl clans are bastions of noble defenders who emerge from their secretive lairs to protect those in need. At their worst, they are cults that crush the spirits of isolated, indoctrinated members.

Despite their break with the Lightweaver, Altus Pearls retain their dedication to hoarding knowledge and defending the Sunbeam Ruins from the Shade, other flights, and Emperors. Most are convinced Sornieth is on the decline, possibly on the verge of a great cataclysm, and they are the only ones capable of preventing catastrophe.

Unlike most Pearlcatchers, Altus Pearls don't fear combat. One of the few times other dragons get to see them is when Light flight goes to war, and armies of Altus pearls arrive out of nowhere with powerful artifacts, strange magic, and deadly fighting abilities. All Altus clans practice specialized combat techniques meant for killing Emperors. (This is one of the few well-known facts about Altus Pearls, and they are colloquially called ‘Emperor Slayers’). In their view, Emperors, and therefore Imperials, are one of the greatest threats to Sornieth. Tolerant Altus Pearls are suspicious of Imperials. Extremists want them eliminated.

An Altus Pearl outside of an Altus clan is rare, and there is usually a special reason for them to leave their birth clan. Individuals are sometimes sent on missions across Sornieth, and they might decide never to return. Some may be assigned an important duty which requires them to stay in another clan. Those that aren’t suited to the rigid, isolated lifestyle may choose to leave. Others are kicked out due to breaking sacred laws or questioning a particularly intolerant clan leader. Most Altus clans forbid marriage and mating between Altus and outsiders, which has caused more than one star-crossed lover to fly off into the night.

Trivia
  • His former Scholar Tahno resides in Clan White Prism too. The second gigantic disappointment Kanin had to swallow. Tanho became a priest for the Lightweaver, the Godess he broke bonds with. Well he told him to do what he felt was right. Maybe he should change his teaching habits.
  • He is writing down every progress he makes in a notebook
  • He deeply cares for his littly sister and will always try to protect her from danger.
  • He doesn´t have close contact to other clanmembers and mostly keeps to himself.
