Ghostbone
The Storyteller

Biography

Ghostbone was born with an unusual condition that causes his energy to drain abnormally quickly when doing any rigorous physical activity. As a hatchling, he was worryingly lethargic, to the point where his parents feared he might not survive his first few weeks. The Clan healers were unable to pin down a cause for his condition - the best they could offer were guesses that it might be a blood disorder or a magic-related ailment.

Working off of a blood disorder theory, they were able to aid the hatchling by supplying him with more poultry and fish, based on Vilavdi's observation that dragons eating such meat tended to recover from blood loss more quickly. Though Ghostbone never grew nearly as energetic as his siblings, his energy level did improve, and he stabilized enough to interact with his parents and siblings so long as all were gentle.

There was still, however, the danger of illness, which could hit Ghostbone hard enough to be dangerous. To aid in getting him treatment for illness as early as possible, the Clan’s expert on beasts suggested attempting to bond Ghostbone with a Death’s Head Stag, the creatures noteable for their ability to sense illness in many animals, including dragons, even before the dragon itself. Ghostbone did successfully bond with one, naming it Mikael; he and Temborr worked together to teach it how to alert Ghostbone and his parents to illnesses.

Being a child who couldn't run around much, Ghostbone did a lot of listening - to his parents, to his aunts and uncles, to his peers, to his sister when she excitedly told him about her day and adventures, to the Clan meetings where his father took him along to keep an eye on him. It wasn't long before Ghostbone learned to tell stories, too, and ones that dragons were willing to bribe him with treats to tell. Though he never grew out of his energy-depleting condition, he finds himself with a very fulfilling life, full of long talks with his family, careful adventures with his mate, Dagny, a Clan who appreciates and enjoys his stories (he and the dramatic actor Akhlut collaborate fairly frequently), and numerous small projects to occupy his time, including translation work, studying history with the archivist Kuarsa, and assisting the librarian Thanetian in organizing and categorizing his collection.
