______ He does not remember much of his birth, other than being eaten by Kronos. All he remembers is his father's stomach: it was damp, warm, and uncomfortably, cramped, as his younger siblings joined them. But the youngest, Zeus, frees them all, and they run, to stand and fight against the might of the Titans. He receives his helmet, that lets him travel freely, invisible.

______ In their victory, the three brothers drew lots; he was given the Underworld to rule, and promised a queen at his side. He tends to his domain the best he can, judges all fairly, guards Tartarus with his might, and waits an eternity for his queen. He knows the moment she is born, a child of the world above, of flowers and summer sunshine. He watches her grow up from afar, a child into a willful teenager into a woman, flower crowns woven through her hair, and always, always, laughing. But even from here he can see her stubbornness, her spirit, her charm. She was always meant to be his queen.

______ One day, he steals her away. Her mother had always been against their marriage, breathing down their necks, concocting plans to keep her away. But this is the way the Fates wrote her story, her thread always meant to return to the kingdom below. She takes his breath away, warmth and afternoon sunshine. He marries her, makes her his queen. She stands beside him, equal, in all things.
