Queen of the Underworld, Exacter of Justice, Destroyer of Light

______ Once upon a time, a girl was fated to be the Queen of the Underworld. Her mother refused, spirited her away and raised her unaware of her destiny, to flock in flowers just newly bloomed and dance in fresh spring breeze, to grow and care and nourish. She was Kore, the maiden, until one day, she was alone, picking flowers in the Vale of Enna, when the narcissus, a marvelous blossom, sprang up to entice her. While she reached for the flower, the ground beneath her sprang open, and the Lord of the Dead claimed his bride, coal black horses driving his chariot.

______ Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld. She and him are forever bound, united. Her mother searches fruitlessly in the world above, the lands frigid and cold, turning to ashes in her wrath. But Persephone is happy to sit with her lord husband, as he yields to her his heart and his soul, gives her all she desires, his kingdom is hers, as well.

______ But her father sends a desperate messenger, her mother's wrath too strong for the world above to bear, he asks for her to return. Her lord husband had once said that to eat the food of the dead would bind her to the underworld, so she enters her lovingly tended gardens and picks out a pomegranate. She eats six seeds of ruby red, and imagines her future kingdom. When morning comes, she confesses to her mother to have eaten the forbidden fruit, and her father decrees that she spend six months in the world above, with her mother, and six months in the world below, with her husband. Her husband hides a smile, and folds her into his embrace.
