Aerico, Part 1, Volume I
???

~

Continued from Sweetstep Part 1

“Why don't you just flutter off, Bug Boy?”

“Oh go tie yourself in a knot.”

A blue-striped Spiral and purple-pied Skydancer stood glaring at each other just outside the castle's main entrance. When they heard the doors creak open, Aerico and Astraeus immediately paused in their arguing and faced away from the other, staring straight ahead. A silver-eyed Tundra stepped outside and closed the moaning doors behind her and walked away from them.

“Out for another walk, Vixen?” Astraeus raised one brow.

“Yes, Astraeus,” said Vixen, not looking back at him.

“Maybe I should accompany you, to keep you safe after—”

“Ha!” Aerico interrupted him. “If another storm came along, it'd carry you and your little insect wings with it. I'll go with 'er.” He darted to the Tundra's side and walked with her. Aerico looked back at the Skydancer behind him and stuck out his tongue, but Astraeus just waved them off.

“Maybe you should've stayed with him, Aerico,” Vixen said.

“He'd love that,” Aerico responded, “he'd think I couldn't protect a single dragon by myself. I'll show 'im,” the Spiral spat.

“That's not what I—”

“Couldn't wait to get away from 'im, either,” Aerico interrupted her, “he's such a bore. Not much of a talker. Can't get 'im to take on a simple dare. How many times have you been out now? Don't you usually stay inside? Though I suppose it is a lovely day out.” He looked around at the bright blue sky above them. A few puffy white clouds drifted lazily by. “Booooring,” the Spiral added.

Aerico followed Vixen around the outside of the castle. Sand squished between their toes and stuck to their pads. When they heard a yelp coming from the window directly above them, Aerico and Vixen stopped in their tracks and looked up.

“That's Sweetstep's room,” Vixen explained.

“I know, but that didn't sound like 'er...” Aerico trailed off.

Vixen turned and resumed walking.

Out of the corner of his large red eyes, Aerico saw the Tundra start to leave and went to catch up with her. “Wait—Ow!” he yelped and quickly reached for his striped backside. He closed his eyes in pain and heard a faint buzzing. Opening one eye at a time, the Spiral saw a cyan-eyed fly dart around his head before it flew off.

“Did you see that?” Aerico called after the Tundra. “That fly just bit me!” He flew back to Vixen's side.

“What fly?”

“It had big Lightning coloured eyes...” Aerico suddenly felt his tail and limbs start to twitch.

“That's a fever fly.”

Oh.”

The Spiral had no control over his body the instant the word left his mouth. His paws immediately reached for Vixen's and when he grabbed her, the Tundra was lifted up and stood on her hind legs with Aerico.

“What's happening?” Aerico exclaimed. “My scales are on fire!” He took Vixen along with him as they spun around, stepping over the other's footprints in the sand.

Vixen's vacant expression didn't change as Aerico dipped her and brought her back up to face him. “The bites of fever flies cause your temperature to rise and make you dance.”

“I know that!” Aerico shouted. “I just can't control it!”

“Nodrake can—”

“I know that, too!” Aerico yelled as he twirled the Tundra. “How do I stop it?”

“You'd either have to be very powerful or have an antidote,” said Vixen.

“Ha! Powerful? I'm strong, I can fight off that stupid fly's venom.” Aerico shut his eyes tight and tried to move his arms and legs himself, but it was no use. "I'll...do it in minute here...”

“You shouldn't strain yourself trying to stop it,” Vixen said as Aerico wrapped her in his tail and twirled her around, spinning her back to face him. “It'll wear off on its own soon.”

Aerico opened his eyes and quickly glanced around. “Hope nodrake's seeing this,” he muttered.

The Spiral stepped in the Tundra's footprints as he made her step back, and the Tundra followed the Spiral when he made her step forward. Aerico and Vixen danced for several more minutes, not saying anything more, and Vixen started to notice Aerico's scales begin cooling down as he slowed his moves, but Aerico continued to dip and spin her with him.

Aerico began moving his tail on his own again, followed by his feet soon after. Though his steps were slowing down, he didn't come to a complete stop, and he hadn't realized he was staring into Vixen's silver eyes until he felt something flutter in his chest. He dipped the Tundra one final time and kept his large eyes on her.

“The fly's venom has worn off, now,” Vixen stated.

“Oh. Yes, it has,” Aerico chucked nervously, his smile crooked, but didn't let the Tundra go. “You dance beautifully,” he blurted.

“You can let go now, Aerico,” Vixen said.

Aerico quickly brought her back up and released his grip. “Yes yes, of course.”

“I'm going to head back inside, now.”

When Aerico watched the Tundra walk away, the corners of his mouth were curled up and a small sigh escaped him.

Continued from Armin Part 3

The following morning, light from the sun sparkled off the surface of the Sea, and warning cries of the gulls were carried by the wind to the two dragons guarding the castle's massive entrance.

The pied Skydancer, Astraeus, surveyed the shores before him. Standing opposite was the blue-striped Spiral, Aerico, who occasionally shot him a few looks. When Rae caught him, he asked,

“What's wrong with you now?”

Aerico grinned at him wickedly. “I'll bet I can chase away more of those birds than you.”

Astraeus heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes. “I'll bet you can.”

“HA. You agreed with me.”

The doors behind them suddenly groaned as they were forced open. A dark red Tundra she-drake greeted them with a hint of concern in her soft voice.

“Ophelia came back early from herb-gathering for Alyss,” Vixen said, “she wanted everydrake to know that there's another storm headed towards our island.”

While Aerico stood still, staring at her, Rae said, “Thank you, Vixen, we'll take extra care.” Vixen then nodded her approval to them before closing the doors behind her, leaving them alone once again. Astraeus turned back to face Aerico, and the Spiral was still gazing after the spot where Vixen had just been.

“I'll bet you can't confess your feelings to her,” the Skydancer dared.

“HA!!” Aerico shrilled. “I'll bet I can!” The Spiral then twisted to the door, heaving it open and darting inside.

Smiling to himself, Rae pulled the doors back shut and stood to face the Sea again. Finally some peace and quiet, he mused.

The moment Aerico had entered the castle, he froze, staring after Vixen until she disappeared down the hall around the corner. The thought of going after her made his heart flutter, yet he remained still. Movement caught his eye, and he spied a little red Fae with shining gold wings to his right.

“Bryony!” Aerico stopped her. “You know all 'bout love.”

“I do?” Bryony wondered, landing before him.

“Bubbles always follows you 'round, you know.”

“He does?” Bryony asked before she was suddenly yanked from the ground and held uncomfortably tight in the Spiral's grip.

“You know that feeling when you see a certain somedrake and your knees knock together?” Aerico asked as his legs shook. He didn't seem to notice that Bryony was trying to struggle to free herself as he'd held her to his skinny chest. “Or when your heart tries to beat its way out? Like something inside you is aching.”

If Bryony heard him, she gave no indication. The Spiral's heart beat much too loud in her little ears as she fought to escape.

Aerico then turned his crimson eyes back to where Vixen had vanished. “Is this really love? When you obsess over a dragon and can't bring yourself to tell them?”

As Bryony continued to fight against his grasp, she managed a muffled response. “Frobfabfly?”

Aerico looked down at her, his smile dropping. “Oh. Then it sounds dreadful.”

Bryony finally freed her face and ceased struggling as she glanced up at him. “Have you even tried telling this dragon how you feel about them?”

“Now why would I—” Aerico suddenly stopped, his red eyes sparking. “Ohhh so she knows 'ow I feel about her! Wow, glad I thought o' that jus' now.” He gave no warning when he opened his arms, releasing Bryony. Before the little Fae could hit the floor, she flared her bright wings and fluttered away, rolling her green eyes and shaking her small head.

After Aerico darted around the very corner where Vixen had wandered, he spied her speaking with a small group of other dragons. Ophelia was attempting to convince Red, April and Rocky to stay indoors until the coming storm came and passed. The trio appeared disappointed, and they hung their wings in defeat even while watching the green Guardian pace away. When they noticed Aerico twist his way towards them, Rocky was the first to perk up, wiggling his brows at the others.

“Hey Rico,” the grey Mirror greeted him. “Have any big plans for today? Especially...” he trailed off, sending a grin Vixen's way, “...this very moment?”

When Vixen turned to face Aerico, her silvery eyes meeting his, the Spiral froze on the spot, his jaws hanging open.

“Uhhhhhhh,” Aerico said, staring at the dark red Tundra.

Vixen tilted her delicate head slightly. “Are you okay, Aerico? Is there something you wanted to tell me?”

When Aerico didn't respond, April widened her four blue eyes. “You mean you left Rae to guard the entrance by himself?” she asked, then nudging Rocky, who returned a grin.

“Maybe we should keep him company and leave you two alone,” Rocky said, winking at Vixen, then following April and Red back down the hall.

Vixen turned her attention to Aerico again, giving him a small smile. “I was just on my way to visit Pigeon. Ophelia also told me that Quill was going to share some of his stories with her. You can come with me if you'd like,” she added, starting to stride away.

A slight shiver wracked Aerico's entire body as he watched her. Finally, he puffed out his skinny chest and darted forward to walk beside her.

“So,” Vixen began, when Aerico remained silent, “how has your morning been so far? I was looking forward to joining Rocky, April and Red out on the beach, but when Ophelia warned us about the storm, it's probably best we all stay inside.”

Aerico opened his jaws to speak, to agree with her, when what Bryony had mentioned earlier crossed his mind.

“I love you, Vicky!” the Spiral blurted before swiftly covering his mouth with both paws. When Vixen halted in her tracks, Aerico lowered his paws and smiled at her expectantly.

“You...” Vixen trailed off, turning around to face him, “...what?”

The Spiral suddenly burst out laughing. “Did it sound like I said something else?” he asked, his smile turning crooked.

Vixen tilted her head slightly again. “No. I heard what you said, I just...can't believe it...”

“Oh! I know it's 'lot to take in,” Aerico rambled, “but ever since that day we danced together a year ago when I was bitten by that fever fly I jus' couldn't stop thinking 'bout you—”

It was Vixen's turn to widen her eyes in surprise. “Aerico...” she tried to stop him.

“—and 'ow beautifully you danced and 'ow beautiful you are—”

“Aerico—”

“—and I was thinking if you 'ad the same feelings—”

“Aerico!”

The Spiral clamped his jaws shut at her shrill voice.

“What happened between us that day,” the Tundra began softly, “when you were bitten by the fever fly and its venom made you dance with me, it was all just an accident. There was nothing going on with us. I...”

As Aerico clung to her every word, he couldn't believe what he was hearing her say. He held his breath as his chest tightened.

“I don't love you,” Vixen concluded. “At least not the way you love me. I'm sorry.”

“Oh.”

“We can still be friends though, right?”

“Yes...yes o' course.”

Vixen heaved a sigh of relief. “I'm so glad you understand—”

“Why should I be upset?” Aerico shrilled. “All I did was expose my deepest feelings an' expected a completely different answer,” he added, his smile twisting up as he started to walk away.

“Um, did you still want to visit Pigeon and Quill with me?” Vixen wondered.

“Oh no,” Aerico insisted, waving one scrawny paw, “I'd better get back to my post with Rae,” he stated simply, continuing his way ahead.

As Vixen watched him, she tilted her head again. “But...aren't the main gates the other way?” she asked. When the Spiral didn't respond, she only gazed after him still, sighing lightly before making her way back to Pigeon's room.

...

Later, alone in his room, the striped Spiral sat at his desk, slouching across the top and sighing. Leaning back, he slumped in his seat.

“There's something inside me that's...” Aerico trailed off, his voice croaking, “...breaking.” His lower jaw trembled for a moment and he closed his eyes, stretching over the table again.

Bubbling laughter echoed all around him.

Snapping his eyes open round, Aerico leapt from his chair, drawing his sword and waving it around at nothing.

“Oo's there?!” he demanded, standing tall. He cast swift glances all around his room, but saw nodrake else with him. Aerico was certain he'd heard a voice, but he appeared to be alone.

“Broken soul...” a hiss sounded. It was not a voice he recognized.

“Show yourself!” Aerico ordered with a snarl.

“...you bared your feelings for that dragon...”

Aerico froze, his crimson eyes widening in shock.

“...and what she did in return...rejecting you...”

What appeared before Aerico now made his breath catch in his chest.

The dark, twisting shape snaked towards him. Its entire head resembled the beak of a large bird, with black feathers sprouting from the back. Round, green eyes bored into his own as is came closer.

shadow serpent

“I can free you from your broken heart,” the strange figure softly hissed.

Aerico suddenly chuckled, and the stranger halted. “Wot do you mean?” the Spiral asked it.

“I mean that you'll never have to worry about that Tundra rejecting your feelings again,” the stranger promised, its beak stretching in a big grin.

Aerico's round red eyes widened and he lowered his sword. “You mean that you can help me try harder to win Vicky over?” he asked, a smile creeping up.

“What?” the shadowy thing startled. “No, I—”

“What a splendid idea!” Aerico exclaimed, standing taller and puffing out his skinny chest in determination. “She'll 'ave to take my feelings seriously if I try harder!” he shrilled, twisting over to the door and putting his sword away before darting out of his room, leaving the strange figure alone to glower.

“Wellllllll,” it started, its beak then curling up in its own grin, “then it looks like I'll have to try harder with the other Spiralssssss...”
