Biography

The Tree

The Conservatory sat at the top of one of the Gneissic Temper's many spires, making it one of only a few places that sat above the ash clouds. So it was only with great reluctance that Clearwater ventured to the lower levels, where the air was mostly fumes and the only natural light came from the churning magma pools. Down here, in Relayer's cramped laboratory, the two dragons prepared a tincture made from the fruits of one of Clearwater's prized trees.

Clearwater prided herself on her miniature trees, small enough to sit comfortably in a pot, but still able to bear fruit. They took a great deal of care and attention to grow properly, and bringing it down here, away from natural sunlight and fresh air, made the Nocturne more than a little nervous. Then again, she was always nervous when she worked with Relayer.

All around Relayer's small laboratory were a dozen experiments in various states of completion, all of which he held in his mind and pondered all at once, leaving little room for him to consider the present moment. His accidents and mishaps were legendary around the Temper; most recently, while experimenting on his own breath a mere hour before Clearwater's arrival, he had managed to turn his entire belly a bright, sickly shade of green. Only time would tell if the effect was permanent.

Seeds were carefully ground into a powder before being mixed with water and brought to a boil. Clearwater carefully stoked the fire while Relayer prepared the final mixture. It was this part that Clearwater found most distasteful; a mix of Alchemist's oil and Relayer's own blood. The theory was that a more potent healing potion could be produced by using the blood of the dragon taking the potion. Technically, the experiment hadn't been approved, but Relayer's words echoed in Clearwater's mind: Always better to ask forgiveness than permission. She wasn't so sure.

"It's ready," Relayer announced. "Carefully now, pour that mixture into this one." Clearwater lifted the heated glass with tongs and delicately poured from one beaker to another. "Excellent...good." Once both liquids were mixed, Relayer held the beaker up and swirled its contents, watching as the colour changed from blood red to a brilliant shade of purple. Then Clearwater heard the sound of glass breaking from across the room. One of Relayer's other experiments, left unattended, had boiled over and shattered its container. Relayer let out a yelp, dropping the beaker he was holding. Clearwater gasped as the beaker hit the table, shattering and sending its still-hot contents splattering onto the potted tree.

"Relayer! You idiot!" Clearwater screamed, rushing over to try and rescue the poor plant. Before Relayer could respond, the sound of wood snapping filled the laboratory, and both dragons watched with shock as the miniature tree began to grow. The pot it sat inside shattered, and its trunk spiraled out into a twisted length, seemingly heading straight for Clearwater's face, stopping suddenly just shy of colliding with her snout. To her surprise, a pair of bright orange eyes opened inches from her face, blinking curiously.

Relayer slithered over, climbing up onto the table and marveling at the sudden transformation. Somehow, the tincture they had produced mutated the tree into a perfect facsimile of a Spiral dragon. It even had his eyes!

"Clearwater," Relayer murmured, stepping down off the table and bringing his face next to hers to match the tree's stare, "I think we just became parents."
