PERSONALITY

Plagueborn think of Natureborn as soft for growing up in lands of plenty - but Ytene has never sought anything as much as she seeks a challenge. Plagueborn, Nature's eternal rivals, think that they are the ultimate challenge for anything to face but Ytene has always thought otherwise - after all, what ravages nature more completely than fire?

Ytene is a driven dragon, eager for a challenge, eager to prove herself, joyous in her success but rarely prideful or arrogant. She wants to succeed in part to know that she can, yes, but in part because she truly believes that her goals - to grow a garden in the Ashfall Wastes - will serve the clan, will help more than just herself. Her joy at her success isn't just pleasure at her own strength - it is pleasure at the joy she has given to others.

ABOUT

The sun is bright through the trees, and Ytene sets down her basket, shading her eyes to look out over the orchard.

So many would have claimed it as impossible - the trees she had planted in the Downs of Light, carefully cultivating the Emberwood that now rings the clan... those, her old clanmates would have argued, were outliers. Even as she'd strengthened the forest's edges and created the Smoulderswarm Grove, full of insects and warm, wet wood, ready to rot, ready for spores to take root, ready for larvae to devour - ready to be another breadbasket for the clan...

None had expected her to have made this.

The orchards are nothing like the cultivations found in the Viridian Labyrinth - of course not. The trees there are thousands upon thousands of years old, some planted by the Gladekeeper herself. To cut them down would be sacrilege. An orchard like this, trees in organised patterns, shrubs and careful allotments of herbs and flowers and root vegetables between them... that was impossible.

Ytene remembered the forest gardens of her home, areas carefully cleared and sowed and allowed to flourish for a few years before the cycle continued, cultivation alongside foraging - but Ytene had always done best in cultivation. She had known she could make this happen, neat and precise and organised, perfect down to the last detail, in even the most inhospitable of places.

And what was more inhospitable to Nature than Fire?

Well. Some might claim Plague, but she has never thought so. Plague is the push to survival, the drive to go beyond limits, to become more than once one was. Plague might be a challenge but it did not ravage plants so utterly as Fire could. Things could survive Plague, if they were strong, or if they were lucky. Once the Fire was loosed - well.

Some few things survived. Some things flourished after the Fire had razed all that stopped them. The ash of their ancestors fed them and made them strong.

Fire, if one knew what one was doing, could do just as much as anything else. With Caustic's melting ice to turn dry ash into fertile mud - of course she could make Nature flourish in lands of Fire.

She smiles out over at the orchard, and when she turns her head to view it all, an apple knocks her head, bright and full and ripe.

She laughs, and she plucks it, and she bites it.

It's juice is fresh and delicious.

RELATIONSHIPS

Caustic | Husband

People think of Iceborn as chilly, as frozen hearted, but Caustic has always had something in him which burns to be more. In that respect, he found an able helpmeet in Ytene, unexpectedly driven for a dragon of Nature. The two love each other well, and have done for a long time.

Phoebe | Dear Friend

It was Phoebe Ytene approached when she sought to join the clan, and it was Phoebe she entreated. Phoebe is the head of the gardens after all: it was her who's approval Ytene would need to make her orchard. The two have been firm friends ever since.

Amaryllis | Soil Technician

Ytene and Caustic can together render the soil fertile, yes - but Amaryllis is so much more exact. As soon as the least thing turns, Amaryllis knows it, and is usually correcting it before anyone else has realised.

Ampelos | Keeper of the Vineyard

Ytene sees a similar spirit in Ampelos, who joined the clan only to ask to attempt to create a vineyard. Just as driven, just as purposeful, just as clever with plants - Ytene readily invited Ampelos to join her and Phoebe for tea and they have become good friends.

Morelia | Companion

Saule found Ytene as she travelled, but Morelia has been with Ytene for years. Indeed, it was Ytene who hatched her egg, back at Vinebridge Village where she was raised, and they have been each others constant companions.
