Biography
'Lyssa'
Potter | Sculptor | Creator
Though she has many talents, 'Lyssa' turned her attention, early on, to pottery. There was plenty of clay around the den, and her denmates were constantly making a mess with it, so when she started to hoard it, her guardians were pleased, if a little confused. What could she want with all that clay?
There was always mud around, too, in the depths of the lair; she experimented with that, too, pulling the substances together and stretching them out into elegant shapes. Whirls of kelp and coral were her favourites. They were simple shapes, but she could make them strong indeed, and she quickly exhausted every possible variation of them, even adding in colour and dyes when she could barter them away from the clan's resident artists.
She started to work on more complex projects. She considered sculpting likenesses and half of Ista volunteered themselves, eagerly. It was certainly pleasant to be so lauded, but every time she sat down to work, her claws shook and the busts came out misshapen, rough things that not even she could recognise. She tried again, focusing on her father's Hippalectryon, or the clan leader's Warcat. They were better, more lifelike, but still somehow wrong.
When we are young, it is as easy to despair as it is to rejoice, and from one moment to the next she became filled with enthusiasm and determination, then slipped back into lethargy and disappointment as, one by one, her creations failed to meet reality.
"Perhaps that is the problem," her mother offered.
"What, wanting what I make to look like something? Isn't that the point of art?"
Alyagaster shook her head.
"Perhaps you just need to create something entirely new."
It was a thought. Her corals and reefs, after all, had been from memory and imaginings, not copied from a specific subject.
Filled with renewed confidence, she started again. She created strange creatures - monsters of the deep and terrors of the air. She built cities, ruins, woods and mountains, and watched them sink back into the formless mass of mud. She discovered that jasper and laboradorite, pushed into her base, made excellent eyes that glowed when they caught the light just right.
Sometimes they were perfect, sometimes they weren't, and with every new creature she imagined, every new world she forged, she realised that she had to leave. Ista Weyr had been the only home she had ever known; her great grandparents had helped forge the clan at its beginning, but the world was full of stranger things than she could ever dream of, and she needed to see them. She needed to find a new place in the world.
So she ventured out, on her quest, taking as many pigments and shards as she could carry, to leave a trail as she went.
A new reality was waiting.
