To properly understand this coatl one must understand her history. You see, Caedis grew up in an all-coatl family. And an all-coatl family consumes quite a bit of seafood. Thus, they lived on the dangerous, melting, Frigid Floes. For there they did not have to constantly break through ice to fish. It's understandable why she never learned traditional draconic, as interaction with dragons outside her family were few and far between. This lack of knowledge proved troublesome for her later in life: she was ready to explore the world but could only speak her native language. She didn't give up, and eventually met a fellow coatl who'd teach her. However, he was a merchant and traveled throughout The Southern Icefield, meaning she had to too.

Time passed and Caedis’ understanding of traditional draconic had grown. It was still rough, but she felt confident enough in it to bid him goodbye and go her own way. A few weeks ago they had visited a clan that Caedis hadn't stopped thinking about since, and she wanted to go there.

They were only barely acquainted, Caedis sweet and caring nature had made enough of an impression on the leader that he accepted her into the clan. However, her rough understanding of traditional draconic immediately got her in trouble. She'd just been trying to compliment a beautiful dragon who'd been kind to her, but had said accidentally said “you're very petty” instead of “you’re very pretty” and did not realize her mistake in time to correct it. To make matters worse, she'd said that to one of the most beloved dragons in the clan and now everyone was upset at her. She'd also not considered how'd it be like being the only coatl; no one knew what it was like trying to learn and understand a whole new language.

While it could've been better, Caedis was content there in that clan. The leader treated her fairly and the rest...well, they'd come around eventually. She'd just have to stop making stupid mistakes when talking. But she did, over and over and over and over and over.

Having fished for food herself her whole life, Caedis naturally became a fisher for the clan. One day, like many others, the leader gathered her and a few others over to tell them where he'd like them to fish. He also wanted to try something a bit different today: fishing in pairs, as they usually just split up and fished by themselves. She'd been paired up with the leader’s nephew, who'd joined a few weeks ago. This had been the first time she'd actually spent time with him and—besides it being very bountiful—the time she spent with him was the most fun she'd had in awhile.

He was silly and playful, not minding any mistakes she made when she spoke. Her eyes couldn't stop watering as she laughed at him and his reenactment of her: he pounced on a pretend fish, scrabbling at it to try and grab it before it flopped back into the pretend water. He then pretended to tumble into the pretend water after the pretend fish, flailing his arms wildly—something that had only almost happened to Caedis.

If he hadn't been so focused on his acting, and Caedis so busy laughing, one of them would of seen the crevice in the snow. But they had, and he tumbled right in, spinning to wildly to open his wings before he hit the icy stalagmites jutting out below.
8a6TOhn.gif You can imagine the horror, as she looked down at that still and broken body below, once so full of life. In her panic, how she reverted back to her native language and couldn't stop thinking about him long enough to tell them after rushing back, though she desperately tried. Finally, she managed to get out “Ice hurt him. Come.” But what they heard was “I hurt him. Come.” One little word, but it made all the difference.

Everyone grieved for him, having enjoyed the brief time he was in the clan. All they could think of were those words, how her red and white coloring looked just like his blood on the snow, how the ice that pierced him glinted like her underbelly. Rumors and gossip turned those words dark and proud for those who did not hear them from her lips, they turned it into something they could hate, something that would make the pain of loss more bearable.

A word—a name—began to be murmured whenever discussion of it broke out. “Caedis,” they called her. The word meant “murder,” “blood,” “slaughter.” It was harsh and unfair, but soon she accepted it as her name and forsook her old one. She too had looked for someone to blame, and—just like everyone else—blamed herself, Caedis. Sure, she hadn't pushed him over. And sure, she'd tried to get help. But she'd known she should of looked out for crevices. She could and should of been able to prevent it from happening. By not stopping it, wasn't she just as guilty of his death? The answer was no, it wasn't her fault, but grief can do crazy things to a mourning heart.

It didn't take long for whispers to spread, demanding her death. They said she was a murder, and deserved it. In the end, it came down to the leader what to do. Caedis could have fled before this moment came, but even she was partly convinced she deserved it—although she still didn't want it. Even in his grieving for his nephew, the leader had a clear and calm head. He knew the truth and did not seek some false revenge. Still, the others were not quite as clear. So he banished her from the clan, for as much her protection as there wants.

And that's how she came to be here. The guilt kept her close to The Southern Icefield, while yet still driving her away. She went from one abandoned lair to the next for awhile, living like a hermit. She didn't want to see any other dragon again, even the slim chance of something like it happening again driving her to keep away. She'd never be the reason something like that happen ever again—even if she had to avoid everyone for the rest of her life.
But even life isn't that cruel. One day she found an old, crumbling, seemingly abandoned castle. Other parts of this floating island were inhabited—but she preferred being somewhat near others. It was nice catching glimpses of others, even if it made her feel even more lonely. To her surprise, the castle was inhabited. Even more surprising, they were [/I]vampires.[/I]

Fortunately for her, these vampires were as against biting as she was against killing. Partly because they really didn't want to deal with the blood-lust it would invoke, and partly because they were polite enough not to. And anyway, if they did they'd probably of been dealt with a long time ago. One was an imperial named Joshua, the other was a coatl named Jonathan.

The vampires were quick to ask her to leave. And she would of complied if a certain spiral named Nom hadn't burst in right then. She was friendly and energetic (also Joshua’s mate), and quickly convinced the larger of the two vampires to let her stay as well as convincing Caedis to. Jonathan was more reluctant. But, since she agreed to keep their existence a secret, didn’t care enough to protest...much.

While not required of her, Caedis too never revealed her existence to the others on the island. It wasn't long before she found out about Joshua and Jonathan attempts to find a way to reverse their vampiric problem, she promised to help all she could. She go, buy, and read books written in traditional draconic—despite her struggles—to help seek out a cure.
The others didn't make a big deal when she mixed up words and Caedis appreciated it. Even so, she still was visible distressed when she messed up. So much so that even Jonathan, with his own struggles consuming him (being a Light dragon who could never go out in the sunlight was hard), noticed. However, he was to callused to really ask and the others couldn't get the reason why out of her.

One day—on one of his bad days—he snapped at her. Jonathan took out his anger verbally, yet rarely meant it. He was used to others brushing it off (as Nom was too cheerful to let it hurt her and Joshua knew he didn't mean it), so he was surprised to find Caedis hours later, alone, and still sniffling with tears dried on her cheek. Even a dragon who's hardened and bitter can feel regret and guilt. And Jonathan felt it that day.

For the first time in a while, Jonathan’s voice was soothing and warm, telling Caedis he was sorry. He hadn't meant any of it. She forgave him right away—of course. Yet she still sat sniffling, looking utterly broken. Jonathan knew she was sensitive—at least now he did—but even his words weren't enough to cause this. Curious he sat done next to her and said softly “What is it?” And she told him everything.

Jonathan that day began to admire her. She was kind, caring, sensitive, and remorseful for things she hadn't even done. If something went wrong, she'd blame herself for it. While the last two were not healthy traits, still it showed a dragon who'd not deserved to go through what she did. She was trusting and suggestible, all it would take was some affirmation that it wasn't her fault to remove that burden off her—and Jonathan gave it. He also, from that day on, gave her someone to lean on, someone who promised himself that he'd protect her, someone who'd eventually become her mate.

While no longer believing she killed him, Caedis still feels guilt for not paying enough attention. She still bears scars within her from it: an unwillingness to interact or talk to dragons outside those four (Wenston having joined the group since then), a certain hesitance to laugh despite her love of jokes, never letting anyone fish with her, and constantly looking around for anything that may harm her friends (which, admittedly, is probably the only reason the castle gets repaired often enough that a chunk doesn't fall on somebody's head). She’s still compassionate and sensitive, still learning traditional draconic through books with a stubborn determination, still willing and ready to give a smile or a kind word, still loving easily and unconditionally—that will never change.
