Gwenfore
Hermit
A simple ocean hermit Clicks and Squeaks Born in a sandy nest at the edge of the ocean, Gwenfore has always had a deep connection to the great salty expanse. Where the rest of her nest mates left for the shady woods or lavender fields, Gwenfore stayed with her sands and seas. As the young dragoness grew, she found herself venturing ever farther into the waters. At first it was restrained to wading around and taking quick dunks in order to spot the passing schools of fish, then it morphed into long swims and quick dives to the ocean floor. Eventually, when she had learned to fly, Gwenfore took to soaring across the waves, traveling with large pods of dolphins as they leapt into the air. Then came the day when she lost her voice, and her ability to fly. She had decided to pay a visit to her clan mates, when the summer wood found fire. The dry wood caught quick, spreading farther and faster than Gwenfore could run. Crisp leaves caught above her head, confining her to the forest floor. After taking a wrong turn, blindly racing into the smoky gloom in panic, she came to a halt at the face of a towering rocky crag. With no place left to run, she pressed herself close to the still cool rocks, cringing away from the falling mounds of burning wood and embers. The clan found her shortly after the fire died, breathing shallow and wings scorched in horrid patterns. They took her carefully to the healer, and did what they could for her, each praying to their own gods that their clan mate would survive. And she did. Yet with all miracles, a price had to be paid. Smoke had ravaged the young dragon’s throat and lungs, leaving her unable to speak. Oh but her wings, her poor wings which had allowed her to soar across the raging water…black and burned, they remained heavy on her back. Once Gwenfore had enough strength, she fled the pitying looks and tender whispers. The following months were difficult. The dragoness refused the help of her clan mates, struggling for survival in her own right. Come one cool autumn night, the Tidelord looked across the world to the little broken dragon, and granted her a gift. When she woke, the crackled black mess of her wings fell to the sand, molting and peeling in flakes and patches. What remained was a wonder to her eyes. The fire blackened cocoon had melted away to reveal the most wonderful pair of butterfly wings. While she still could not fly, Gwenfore learned to swim beneath the waves, using her new wings to propel her forward. And even though her voice never returned, her lungs grew strong and she learned to communicate in clicks and squeaks, like the dolphins she so loved. |
