The next dragon you see is considerably smaller than many of others that you've seen in the den. Her black body and purple wings are covered with a sort of oozing goo that almost seems alive. Her face is obscured by a large mask that appears to be made out of a bird's skull. As your eyes trail over her appearance you see even more bird skulls, some blending into her wings. While not as physically intimidating as the last dragon, she's still terrifying.

As you approach you see her eyes follow you, but she doesn't move in your direction. In fact, as you get closer, she doesn't move at all. She stares at you when you reach her, waiting for you to make the first move. Slowly, you speak.

Hello. I'm the traveler who recently stumbled in. What is it you do in this clan?

The dragon eyes you warily and speaks, her voice strained and soft.

"I create the familiars in this clan."

To your knowledge familiars were usually creatures who bonded with dragons and helped them in return for shelter. You had never heard of a way to make them. So you ask,

What do you mean by creating familiars?

She responds,

"We are not like most clans. Here in the Southern Icefields it is dangerous to be in the open for long periods of time. We have been fighting against the encroaching monsters for centuries. As such, we do not 'bond' with the beastclans. Instead, when we fight a battle, we have a dragon go out to collect the body and bring it back. if we are short on food we may eat it. Otherwise I take the corpse and bring it back.

"It's quite simple, really. It does not take much magic to bring back such small bodies. By bringing them back, we can control them. It is much easier to send out an undead monster to gather food than a living dragon. Less of a risk that way. Of course, once I reanimate a corpse whoever wants that creature as a familiar must take it and apply their own magical signature so that the familiar will respond to them and them only."

You realize that even if the corpses are 'reanimated' they still have no working organs. More than a little hesitantly, you ask,

And... how do you keep the bodies from rotting away?

She fixes you with a hard look and says,

"The frigid weather of the Southern Icefields keeps the corpses from decaying too quickly. They are kept hidden in the snow drifts, ready to call upon if needed. Familiars must not be used to much or in too warm of conditions without being returned to the ice."

You leave, more than a little horrified.
